Suggestions for purchasing an extended warranty

I am about to purchase a GULP! minivan. Does anyone have any suggestions about who to buy an extended warranty and if it is worth buying for a Honda Odyssey. I plan on having this vehicle forever. The dealer offered one for $1100 for 7 years/70,000 miles and I found one online at http://www.warrantybynet.com for 7years/100,000 miles for $1039, this one has $50 deductible and excludes things like refrigerant, and too many things to list here, I don't know the specifics of the warranty offered by the dealer.

I believe I've seen you, but you don't go to Off Topic that much, do you?

Anyway, it might be worth it to go with the dealer warranty for these reasons:

1) It sounds like the on-line warranty doesn't provide as good of coverage.

2) Even though you are paying a little more, atleast you know who to talk to and where they are located.

3) Even though the warranty from the dealer has 30,000 miles less of coverage, if something is going to go wrong with a vehicle, it will go wrong in the first 50,000-60,000 miles (more than likely).

So I'd say, go with the dealer.

if you must get the extended warranty, go with Honda's...it will be less hassle overall. "other" warranties tend to give you a run around more so than a dealer package.

But first, I'd do some research at jdpower or consumer reports, or blue book, to check the repair history. You might be able to just skip it.

Everybody I ever knew who owned a Honda rarely had any problems with them. May be a waste of money.

wow, I am on a darkfury disagreement roll, today. Sorry, man. Anyhow, I TOTALLY found an aftermarket warrenty to be a very rewarding experience. Here's some things you have to know, though. The warrenty company acts just like any regular car insurance company. So they will try to minimize costs. But not all comapnies are equal. Research and find out who the Honda company is using(and find out the companie's customer satisfaction rating). I used to have an awsome company. They would let me take all my repairs to the dealer. They did haggle 2x with the Ford(over costs). But then again, car shops inherently try to maxmize profits. Eventually, a compromise was always made(in X number of hours). Hell, one time an oil changing shop near campus(with a name like stiffy rube ) ended up unclamping my transmission hose during their overall diagnostic test/oil change. I drove the car to SF(from LA) and the hose finally came off. Transmisison destroyed . The delaer couldn't even find any new trannies stateside...so they ended up having them boat the thing from Japan(took a month). The warrenty company picked up the repair bill well over 6K AND kept me in a rental for that whole month(they were on corporate plan with Enterprise for any repair that took over 1 day). I hate to gush on and on over the experience, but I was totally happy with it. Also remember that the warrenty IS as negotiable as the car, itself. The fiancing department tried to sell it to me for something like 1.5K(for the plan I was looking at). I ended up haggling it down to $800. Man, did I get WAY WAY WAY more than that back in repairs. The only downside is that ANY modifications to your csar is a no-no. So as long as I was covered, there were no performance adding items on my car(hell I couldn't even chage the springs to lower it or get nicer rims). But that trade-off was worth it!

I am gonna go with DF on this one, I have heard of many people getting dicked over by the aftermarket ones. Well, besides it's a honda it probably won't have any problems, I mean those things are bulletproof.

Ditto. I have never personally met anyone that has actually had to use their extended warranty.

Hm - funny this just came up. Right before Christmas I took my Saturn in for an oil change & to look at the 'service engine' light that just came on. I had 46k miles on it & I did buy the factory extended warranty (up to 60k).

Anyway, later that day I got a call from the dealer telling me that my cylinders were excessively worn, there was major carbon buildup, and a bunch of other problems and that the engine had to be rebuilt. Fortunately, it was all covered under the extended warranty. Otherwise, that would've been a $3000 suckerpunch to the back of my head

I ended up paying for the oil change and a $100 deductible. Saturn paid for the rest, including a rental car for a week. All I can say is thank goodness I bought that warranty!!

(On a side note, the day after I got it back I sold it & leased a Ford Taurus. I don't think it makes sense to keep a car for more than 3 years anymore.)

I will have to look through my old car paperwork to try and find the company name (been off warranty for 1.5 years ). one really good way of finding out is to go to a local dealership's repair department(and ask them which ones they haven't had problems with....not the one you are buying the car from). They know the ones that they don't have to pester and everytime I spoke my old company's name, various Ford dealers(Galpin and a couple others) would be pretty happy. And after reviewing the terms of their contract, other repair centers would be pretty happy. come to think of it, it reminds me how i got my timing belt serviced at a Firestone(I had forgotten that was part of the cost of my 60K service(normal thing like fluid changes, filters, and brakes weren't covered). The warrenty paid Ford to redo the belt when I brought my car in for some other service. But like I said, just check your dealers' repair shops and find out which ones they have the least trouble with. I know I can;t get one for my next car, b/c I plan on modding it. but if I wasn't...I would reccomend it, highly.

i bought my civic ex 99 few years back and went into the dealer with my mind made up already NOT to buy extended warranty since i was always told NOT to buy them since they are NOT factory warrant and they are aftermarket. anything that they cover will be only MAJOR fixes. i guess the analogy was if you have a heart surgery, this type of insurance will probably pay for it. anything let.......forget it.

standard procedure, the finance manager offer me the extended warranty, i declined. first was $1100, and then 700, then less and less. he finally offered me a deal that i cant refuse.....a mere $80.00!!!

i was then later told that dealer received aftermarket warranty for next to nothing. anything they can sell would be pure profit. can anyone verify?

Good analogy, but what happens if you break both your legs? your screwed and you have to fix them yourself. I remember reading somewhere(Not sure if it is true or not) that something bad happened to the engine and they claimed that they had never heard of them before, so they had to pay for it. So unless it's really cheap($500 or less) I would save my money so when and if ***** happens you have some money to help pay for it cause you put that money in a high interest bank account and now it can pay for the whole thing.

i agree too. funny thing is that of all my cars, the civic is the only one that i bought extended warranty. i guess pretty much anything has a price. $1100 for example, is way too much for an extended warranty. an amount so little (depending on individuals) will be worth it.....just buy a sense of security.

Case in point...

I bought my '99 Dodge Dakota used about 6 months ago. It had 34,000 miles on the warranty and was still eligible to buy extended warranty coverage... so I bought the warranty at a cost of $1,600.

In the past 3 months the following break downs have occured:

I had a an oil leak and the "Check Engine Light" came on. I thought it would be something simple... it turned out that I had leaks in the Intake Gasket, Oil Pan Gasket, Rear Main Seal, Timing Cover Gasket, and in the water pump... They also found that it had a cracked cylinder head as well. All in all, this is about $2,200 worth of repairs...

I also had some problems with the front end tie rods and ball joints which cost another $1,600 to fix (all under warranty).

So for a total of $3,800, I have had saved over $2,000 in buying the warranty. (I'm not even counting the $1,200 paint job repair that was fixed under the main factory warranty either...)

I'm just glad that I had it to cover me.

DarkFury, i sympathasize with your situation. i wouldn't want to be in ur shoes......going thru all those trouble. maybe its time to look for import cars........they are know to be trouble free. just a suggestion.......
