2002 accord

hi guys
im never in here but i have a question

ive had my 2002 accord for like 3 months now and i love it btw

people always say i should never have gotten it. They say its because people always smash up their new cars and they sai i should have bought an old peice of crap car as a first car, i say they are just a bit jealous cause they are riding around in the 84 olds.

heres my logic

i spend about 3000 a year on my car, and spend no matenance costs what so ever, oils changes, everthing paid for for the next 3 years

if i were to get a used car, for around 1500 to 2000, that wouldnt be bad

used cars are know to be problem plauged, so say, the tranny goes, i have to put more UP FRONT money into it, i have to pay for all the matenance, and if anything else goes wrong with it, im stuck paying for it upfront

granted, people that cant drive usually smash up their first car, but i consider myself a good driver, with all those hours put into gran turismo 1,2,3. if i do smash it up, i have insurance to compensate me some what.

question is, what do you think

do you think that the new car was a bad idea or not? its been bothering me for a while that ive got nothing but greif from people about this car

btw i got the 4 cylinder accord, but opposite to what most people say or told me this thing has pickup! and the speedometer says no different than the v6 accord, even tho it may take me longer to get there

ok im done

I think that you were fine buying a new car. You won't be seeing a lot of the hassle that you would with used car, mainly because of the warranty. It might cost a little more, but for some people, it is worth it. I personally wouldn't buy a new car, but that is in my current situation.

As for what some of your friends say about people always crashing and banging up their first car, I think that that is BS. It all depends on the driver and the person. If you know how to take care of a car, you should be fine, whatever your decision.

Now, what I said about me not buying a new car. What I meant by this is, I would rather buy a newer used car from a dealer. IMO, used cars that still come with warranties are the way to go. They cost less, they don't have the hassle of other new cars, and when you get done with them, you can just traded them in for another, similar used car.

i was actually thinking at first of going the used car with warrenty route with a 99 olds cutlass supreme, loaded and everything. wasnt a bad deal. tehres nothing wrong with a used car in the sense that if it is like fairly new with warrenty. I guess maybe i dont have the patience to work on an older car or wait to do things with money up front ya know?

You can't go wrong with a Honda. My other car is a 1999 Honda Accord V6 EX coupe. It has around 66,000 miles on it now and other than regular maintenence, the car has been a gem.

A friend of mine has been having some problems with his Accord, but that is mainly due to improper maintenance... either that, or he is a pedant. Can't tell which, but probably a little of both.

Your gonna smash your first car, all you can do is hope it's a little smash instead of a big one.

See, here's the deal... There are a couple things that have changed in just the last few years that have thrown a wrench into the old "used over new" logic.

1 - It used to be that most new cars came with mediocre warranties. This only started to change about eight years ago, and now many new cars come with free service - the dealer pays for all regular maintenance for three years and such. This is a big incentive to buy new over used, and a reason that didn't exist a few years ago.

2 - With the explosion of personal leasing in the last few years dealers lots are LOADED with lease-return vehicles, and most all of them have the remainder of the original warranty. It used to be, used cars had real short (30-90 days) warranties or no warranty at all, even if they were only two years old - but this was offset in the mind of the consumer by the significantly lower cost over a new car.

Now, these things have really only changed in the last eight years or so - and this is fighting against a decades-long stereotype. The "new vs used" argument used to be greatly tilted in favor of used, but the playing field is much, much more level now. It's only human nature that people haven't bothered to update their thinking, which is why you're getting grief over buying new.

In the end, it doesn't matter what other people think. If you want new, and you can afford new - then get new. I for one won't presume to tell you you should have gone used, I'll just envy you for being able to afford a new car in the first place.

Just for clarity, the speedo doesn't indicate top speed, or anywhere near it. My car says 160, and If my car could do 160, it would probably fall apart.

My car's speedometer maxes at 85 (yes, 85) and I know for a fact that I have been over that before.

I think first cars shouldn't be brand new. Mainly because when you haven't been driving long, there will be certain circumstances that you just haven't experienced so you wouldn't exactly know how to react if it happened. It may get all banged up and you'll be left with not much choice but to fix it (because its a new car). Which may not exactly be a great thing depending on your financial situation. With an older car, you could just leave it as it. Cuz its an old car.
And what OC said makes a lot of sense. Many of the cars out there now that are used, are no more than 3 years old. And come with the dealer warranty still. All cars eventually age and their warranty will expire. Like my first car was old and I bagged it up pretty good. Some were my fault others were not. But still, it got beat up.

I never smashed my first car, just my second car. :-)

Anyway, if you are the type of person that respects nice stuff, pays for it yourself, and can afford it why not drive a brand new car?

Besides, it can't be argued that new cars are safer than older cars. And since he has a loan on it, that means full coverage is required, so a little ding every now and then will be covered.

Just some thoughts.

True, but every claim (regarless of fault) will be recorded and will bring up your insurance bill in the long run. Now lets not forget the deductible.
