Question Door speakers, 6 1/2" vs 5 1/4"?

My car has a Rockford Fosgate 5 1/4" component door speaker set now that are 8 yrs old (were considered very good then) but I've never been thrilled about their sound from day #1. They still work but I have a blown tweeter and IMO, 6 1/2" speakers should be alot better (comparing 2 different sizes, similar specs, apples to apples) BUT that'll mean requiring door panel modification to fit them and I'm not really sure that I can pull it off w/o making it look bad (ie: "rigged").
I'm going for a component set with matching tweaters/crossover so what's anyones opinion on this, worth the hassle of modifying or can a really decent set of 5 1/4" speakers be found? Crutchfield has some interesting choices (better selection than BB or CC locally) and some are pricey but if they sound good, it'd certainly be ALOT easier to keep the stock speaker size.

If the door panel mods are extensive, I'd leave it to the pros. If you end up sticking with 5 1/4" inchers, peruse the car stereo magazines at the local bookstore and look for reviews. I never buy ANY piece of hardware any more without reading a few reviews.

For the most part (though not always), the money you save by not having to modify your door can buy you better sounding 5.25" speakers. It's a trade off.

i agree with DF here.

Crutchfield is a good company. i mean, if you're not that concerned about price, and just want to buy from a company who you KNOW will be reliable and won't screw stuff up, they're a safe bet.

but i don't think that most of us here are in the boat, or we wouldn't be checking the deals page every day

basically, i am not sure there is anything at crutchfield that you can't find for less money at another decently regarded online store. but their website is great for pulling specs on equipment, etc

I agree. I've bought stuff from them before but they're pricier than what I can often find locally, if I'm looking at the same stuff.

I guess that before I do anything, I'll stop by a custom car stereo install place and see what they estimate my cost will be to use 6 1/2" speakers. If it's too much $$, I'll just stick with 5 1/4".
