It would cost more than the value of your car. You would be better off selling your car and buying a manual version.

It depends on whether or not you can find a good parts car as there's many things one needs to swap out.
I went the other way with my Volvo wagon as I hated their manual tranny with my turbo. Believe it or not, my car's faster with an auto trans but it's also got a high stall speed torque convertor too so that helps, no turbo lag either.

In simplest terms, if you have to ask...
The only way it would be even remotely affordable would be if you could do the work yourself. Since you're even asking the question, I'm going to assume that's beyond the scope of what you're ready to tackle. And that's not an insult. I sure as heck couldn't do it myself either. For the most part, like brain suggested, you'd be better off trading the car in, and buying one with a manual. It'll probably actually cost you less to do it that way...

Very true. When I converted mine, I did everything myself plus I work as a tech at a dealership so I have the shop with hoist, power tools, trans jack plus I know the car line inside and out, I can do things like that on Volvos in my sleep.
I also know a guy in another state who's got a huge Volvo only salvage yard so I trusted him to find me good, low mileage parts off a newer car. He sent me everything I needed so it then very easy for me to drive in on a saturday, swap the trans and all related parts and drive it home about 8 hours later. It'll be more hassle and more time consuming doing it yourself w/o prior experience at home, in your home garage or elsewhere. I later sold my MT trans parts to another guy from another state so I pretty much broke even on the deal. |

I would think that a car equipped with a manual trans would be cheaper than one with an automatic. Last time I read, manual trans cars account for only about 5-10% of the new car market.

Quote:
the best way to do this is to get a b16A engine swap, it would come with a 5 speed tranny, u would make ur car fast & manual. so for the $2500, or 3000 u would put ur money to work.

It cost me about $700 for my complete auto trans conversion "kit" (many parts besides the trans) including a radiator (necessary in my case, not for going the other way however) and I sold my trans parts for the same amount plus more for the radiator as that was sold to another guy who needed one and had a MT.
All my conversion then cost me was my time but the only way anyone else can do that is to know where you can get all the needed parts cheap (and in good condition) plus do everything yourself. It'd be costly if you had to pay someone to do all that. I later opted for a HP high stall torque convertor (2,600 rpm, about twice that of stock) and that cured turbo lag, big improvement. |
