interesting lessons in driving - spin that 944...

thought i'de share...

My sister-in-law's brother who is 18 just bought an '86 944 Auto. This kid dreams, talks, thinks about Porsche's all day long. Oh yeah - it doesnt help that the guy he works with (Richard) drives a new Boxter, and use to have a 944S2 or something like that that really kicked a$$.

So basically, this kid thinks that Porsche's are superior to almost every other car on the street - possibly even ferraris... All because Richard has taken him for a few 90mph (supposedly) on/off ramps around town. He thinks his 150hp 200lb heavier AUTO car can just plain smoke my little '91 318is with 136hp w/ 5spd.

First mistake is that he thinks that Porsche's are superior to BMW's. Even though his car pretty much equals mine.

Second mistake is that he has had maybe a year of driving experience. He's only had his car 2 weeks. I've been riding a cycle for 3+ years, and autocrossing my car for over the last year. I know my car well, I know its limits, i know that slowing down BEFORE the corners helps keep the car from um.... well, just read....

So were moving my grandma to another rest home. We're about to take off, the Uhaul is behind us. The way out of the rest home theres some curvey roads with some good visibility around the corners. I've been down this way a few times. Sometimes theres sand and gravel on a few of the corners, but not always.

Well, I take off. I'm redlining 1st... 2nd... get into low 3rd. Back down into 2nd a few times... This kid makes his 3rd mistake - He tries to follow me. Obviously, since he drives a Porsche, he can automatically keep up right? Well, thats what he thinks. All i do is put more and more distance between us. On the 4th or 5th turn, there it is - the nice little patch or sand / gravel. I see it, brake in teh straight accordingly, and take the turn, still doing up around 45 or 50. Here's the biggest mistake he makes yet - he either too stupid to realize that tires cornering on a road with sand on it wont hold traction as well as pavement, or he thinks that because he's driving a Porsche that he just doesn't have to slow down - cause afterall, its a freakin porsche, and it can SOOOO out-handle a BMW.

Well, what happens when you mix an Inexperienced over-confident driver with an over-driven car? Yup, you guessed it - You spin me round round baby right round like a record baby. This guy does a 180 and gets within a foot of slamming his nice wheels sideways into the curb on the other side of the street.

Later on (in front of my brother) i chewed him out pretty well. Hopefully hell learn his lesson this time, w/o damaging his car.

On a brighter note, i encouraged him to come out to the autocross events and learn how to drive that beast. It has the potential to outperforme my lowly BMW, even if it is an Auto, but only when driven properly. I DISCOURAGED him from drifing at teh Porsche club, because its much higher speeds than the SCCA events (90mph +), and you have a chance of rolling the car if you get off track.

Thats my story for the evening...

i'm very sure it could, but given the wrong incompetent driver in the porsche, and the right experienced driver in the bmw, the BMW woudl still win. Heck, a diesel New Beetle would win

He probably wasn't too stupid to realize his tires wouldn't hold but didn't know what to do. If he is as inexperienced as you say he most likely could not process all the stimuli coming at him. That comes with practice. This good bite of humble pie might be just what he needed to get him back on track (no, pun not intended)

I love both Porsche and BMW. They have made some of the most beautiful cars to ever grace the planet. I would go with BMW for all around driving, and side with Porsche for performance, but that's just me. I own an 84 944. Nice car but I gotta fix it up first...
