Should not: Yugo
Should: Test drive it before buying, have a friend or someone you know that is knowledgable in cars and mechanic that can inspect the car to let you know if you're getting what you pay for. Check car ratings. Keep in mind how many mpg you get, because that can surely add up. Decide between if you want it to look nice, and go fast.. or more for basic transportation, point A to point B. |

Okay, well, you might want to lean more to "pre-owned" than "used".
First, physically inspect the car yourself to make sure that it is what you want and in the shape you want it to be. If you have any friends who are mechanics, have them give the vehicle a look over too. The reason I said to go with pre-owned, however, is because you can get the car while still under warranty--in some cases, you can even extend the warranty. That way, if there are any major problems, you should be covered. Now, if you are asking what kind of car to go with, as far as models are concerned, I would say that is more of a personal choice than anything else. What do you think looks good? Is it roomy enough for you. Test drive it. Does it handle well? Does it have enough power. If you are looking at the likes of Lincolns and Lexus's, I can't give you much advice because I don't have much experience with those cars.

I'd definitely (note, no A in that word) go with a "certified" used car. You'll get a warranty, and likely service records also. Most certified cars are lease-returns, and those are typically very well cared for. Also, the quality of todays cars is much better than 10 years ago, so buying a used car is not nearly the risk it once was.

Lincolns and Lexuses are two very different cars. First of all, Lincolns have crap for resale value so you would get a very good deal on a used one. When leasing, a Lincoln LS loses 49% of it's value within the first two years. On the flip side, most Lexus models will lose about 30% within the first two years. There is a reason for this. A Lexus will last you much longer and will be more reliable than a Lincoln. My friend's mom bought a 91 LS400 and put over 350,000 miles on it while only doing standard maintenence. She loved it so much, she ended up buying a new LS430 and keeping the old LS400 around.

![]() ![]() ![]() same goes with other american luxury cars. my friend once bought a used caddie cuz he thought they were a great deal. he learned the hard way and bought a lexus. as far as regualar cars go, german cars genarally hold thier value better, followed by select japanese makes and then most american cars. there are bound to be exceptions to the rule, but this is just a rule of thumb. also the last thing you should do before buying the car you chose, have it checked by an independant mechanic. you probably wont need to if you get a "certified" used car, but if you go for one by private seller you need to do this. it will be the best $50 you spend.
