my accord is faster than it should be
i know my car has only 135 hp in the shape of a 2.3 inline 4. In theory it should be pretty slow right? I drive this thing everywhere, and i edge at like 120 on the highway with relitive ease before i pee my pants. I was on the highway yesturday and some chick in a miata thought it would be fun to try and fly by me, i dont know why. so she does, but she didnt expect a litle "value" family sedan to come up and totally anihilate (spl?) her for a good 2 miles till my exit. i dont get why my car is so peppy (read: neck breaking at times) but has such a small engine with an auto-tranny. any clues?

Find a track. Run a few. and get yourself a time.
Judging the speed of your car by comparing it to the speed of another car is usually a bad idea. I once outran a Camaro in a four cylinder Chevy Celebrity. Anyone standing by the side of the road would have been amazed. It's a little less impressive when you know the Camaro was missing on a couple of cylinders, and about to cough up it's transmission. With that same Celebrity, I beat a Mercedes 560SEL through a really twisty section of highway. Not because the Celebrity was faster, or handled better (obviously)... but just because the other driver played cautious because he didn't want to risk his dad's car. (we were 17 at the time) If you really think your car is quicker than normal, see if you can get it on a track somewhere. Maybe you've got a stealth pocket rocket.

Well, I know my friend's Accord is really fast too, but he has the 6-cylinder engine in his. He beat a Mustang pretty bad in a race one time, so who knows. As jase said, though, it is kind of hard to judge versus other cars.
You might just have what some people call a "sleeper": a car that, on the outside, is not very impressive, but, on the inside, acts like a race car. Personally, after seeing what my friend's Accord can do, I don't underestimate them anymore.

accords are ok. they have a lot of torque (in comparison to other 4cyl cars) - which is what helps you accelerate quickly.
miatas are NOT fast cars. they put out between 105 and 133hp depending on teh model. They weigh in aroudn 2100 lbs. Now think of it - 115hp doesnt get a 2100lb car moving very quickly. come race me - i weigh in at 2600 and have 136hp. I'll dro pinto 3rd, take you up to 90, and shift into 4th and take you up to 125 (speed limiter kickes in - until tuesday when i get my chip installed). On tuesday, when i get my chip... i'll take you up to 98 in 3rd, and up to about 135 in 4th... speed limiter removed and revv limiter increased by about 500rpms. ![]() Oh, BTW, my torque sucks. its about 110ft/lbs of torque. ![]()

ill have to agree with the other posts here. yesterday i pulled ahead of a mustang (not new, but the previous body style) off the line in a stop light drag race until about 55 mph when he flew past me in a corolla. im pretty sure a mustang would smoke me, but it looked like he didnt know how to shift right.

i was thinking today, i have basically a stripped down accord no power andthing no power seats, and more "flimsy" componants, which means my car is the lighter than the average accord, about 300-400 pounds lighter, would that make a big difference in my acceleration? i overtook a bmw 528i even tho im sure he was really trying

the 528i isnt a very fast car...
whatever you do, dont ever try to take a 325is or a 535i / 540i. They will stomyour ass, chew you up, and spit you out. ![]() i know a guy with an older 535i with a higher rear end, an M gearbox, chipped, and soon hes factory turboing it (same motor as in the 735i turbo). Look sto be running about 15lbs boost, and wil be putting out about 400hp easily. hehe and no, your car doesnt corner too well. yeah - you can run it in an autox - you'll learn how to drive a lot better, but you'll never be very competitive. |
