Monaro, the new GTO.
This should be available in 2004. I will definately have to check this thing out when I can see one up close.
http://www.forbes.com/2002/03/27/0327gto.html http://www.motortrend.com/feb02/gto/1.html If not this, what is your favorite sports coupe with a 300HP+ naturally aspired output? |

I really expected more with Bob Lutz running the show. This car has no distinctive styling whatsoever. I hope this will not be the trend that he follows in the coming years.

I guess it'll be a sleeper, like the original GTO. It sure doesn't look like anything with 300hp.
I'm as excited about a 300hp coupe as anyone, but... A replacement for the Firebird? I was never a big fan of the firebird/Camaro line... but at least they looked distinctive. They were easily indentifiable, and they had character. But this thing, as good as it might be under the skin, looks like everything else on the road...

I'm thinking custom shops are going to sell a lot of body kits for this car.

This picture I put up top is how it looks in Austraila, but when it is brought here it is changed a little with Pontiac accents. Look at the motortrend link for pictures of that.

the firebird had distinction, once they made the firehawk version. Before then, they were the same car with different plastic, something GM is famous for doing

They have this in the July issue of Car and Driver (pages 36 - 37). Since the car is essentially going to be the same as the Australian version, just rebadged as the GTO. Supposedly, the Monaro is the considered the equivalent of the Mustang in Australia for the last 30 years.
There are two versions of it, a Supercharged V6 or a V8 model, which Car and Driver test drove. 302 HP at 5200 RPM 4 speed auto or 6 speed manual Price as tested: $30,977 0- 62mph in 6.6 sec 1/4 mile in 14.7 sec They seem to think that it is a pretty nice car. Appearance is ok, its comfortable for 4 adults, and will best all other full sizes out there.

Even before that, when you saw a Firebird/Camaro coming, you knew it was something sporty. Even if you couldn't tell which one of the two it was until it got closer. It was long, low slung, and looked powerful, even if half of them were anemic V6 machines. You couldn't mistake a Firebird/Camaro for an Impala, or a Malibu. This new one, well... unless they do some major restyling to it, it's going to look like a couple dozen other cars on the road... about as unique as a Camry. |

Being an "old guy" who was a kid when the original GTOs were new, IMHO those had unique styling and although they looked similar to the Lemans back then, the GTOs looked distinctly different compared to most other cars from that era.
One can't say that at all from any of the pics shown so far of this new car. It looks just like everything else common out there now (Camry like ) except that it'll have something other than GMs ONLY basic FWD car engine (the 3.8 liter V6) but unfortunately too it'll also be FWD (I believe ?).

Pontiac designers need to learn to make products more distinct. I never understood GM's philosphy of taking say the blazer, and making a jimmy, and the olds bravada, and the envoy. 4 trucks, just 1 basic truck with new plastic. Wheres the originality. cars should be made like they were in the 60's. Each year they changed enough to tell what was different from the previous year, and very few cars were based on another car. |

Its called being CHEAP. If you use the same platform and basic design for all four models, you dont have to do a complete redesign. So you spend 1/4 of the cost and gain the most profit.

Or, it's called lack of design talent. They need to actually make a lot more of those concepts.

NS!!! LMAO I work at a dealer that just happens to also sell Pontiacs and.................yuuucckk! Sorry but the new ones just don't impress me one bit. I would buy a '64-'73 GTO however and possibly a few others from THAT era but nothing since has done anything for me. Those Aztecs STILL amaze me, I'm amazed that anyone with any self respect would ever be seen driving one. |

This is no replacement for the Trans Am Ram Air. The Ram Air just looked damn intimidating when it pulled up nex to you with that big a$$ intake on the hood. Not to mention it was 320hp. This will just drive more people to buy a Cobra, especially with the 2003 model having 390 hp.
