BMW e30 fans... (i.e. Hapoo, and others?)

did an e30 to e36 window switch swap... only one so far - have the other one half finished.

the swap was pretty tough... first i had to figure out the pinouts on both the switches, and figure out how i was gonna hook up the e36 (4 wire) switch to my e30 (5 wire) plug...

took about an hour per switch to figure out how the contacts worked, and how they routed the + / - and reversed the polarities and what went where... Then, i had to figure out how the two models related...

FINALLY figured it out lastnight.

I'll try to do a full write up sometime and post it on my website. Now that i've got the wiring figured out, its pretty simple.

BTW, the trim around the e36 switches (the part that fits down in the console) is the same size as the lip of the e30 switches (you have to cut out the hole just a bit.) Once you cut, there's no turning back.

thanks doods... i finished the other one just a bit ago... looks good with them both in there. Now i need to do something with that ugly power cutoff switch (just above teh right passenger switch)

BTW, i got that shifter off Ebay - its a guy that hand-lathes them in many different styles. They're all VERY cool (and about $35 - $50) and he even has a beer keg type shift knob.

i'd just take the lock out and use it for something else, i mean, its a little impractical anyway in a 2 door car, especially since its on the passenger side... WHO are you going to stop from opening their window?!

I can only imagine... Dr. Evil driving and Mini Me in the passenger seat... Mini Me is rolling the window up and down repeatedly, and Dr. Evil pushes "THE SWITCH".... then Mini Me goes to push "THE SWITCH" and Dr. Evil slaps his hand and begins repeating "Zip-It"...

OK, I have a question....why are you switching out the window switches? I mean, yes it looks better, but I guess I dont see the point to it other than aesthetics. Am I missing something here?

That said...in terms of modding a 323iC. I looked into a Dinan chip but the power increase seemed to be minimal. What if any mods would y'all recommend to it.

Thanks in advance.

well, you see the switch on teh right in the first pic? the two "buttons" push down independantly, and are pretty hard to press, and they stick up a lot.

these look better, feel better, and dont wear your fingers out.

BTW, i just dropped a TMS / JC chip (Turner Motor Sport / Jim Conforti) which moved my redline up by about 500rpms, and did other things to teh fuel injection etc...

Car feels better, pulls stronger, and that extra 500rpms really comes in handy.

BELIEVE ME when i say the price of the chip is the best power boost you can get for the buck. PLUS, when you DO do other mods (exhaust, intake etc) they'll be more noticable with teh chip in.

I only spent $75 on my chip ("used") - on average you'll pay $200 new for a chip.

BTW, Dinan chips give more low-end torque, and TMS / JC chips actually sap a little low-end torque, but increase the torque and hp in teh powerband (over 3500 - 4000rpms), and especially where it counts - in that extra 500rpms.

If so, i could just "copy" it
Just curious though.

yes and no... it was an eprom, (UV erasable or whatever?) but it was mounted on a circuit board, just slightly larger than the chip (in a socket, no soldered).

this board has another little chip on the bottom of it. TMS has scratched the nimbers off the smaller chip, adn had the number #44 written on it in magic marker. Clearly this is they're method ot keeping people from copying the eprom...

in the manual it says the chip wont work w/o the accompying board, and it said something about it being an encryptor or decryptor or something like that.

the dinan chip or others may not have the extra board attached to them. I whish i sould find out. My original plan was to make a few backups of my own chip (and "loan" them out)...

hehe, yeah that sounds right. They usually do that with eproms to protect the data. Of coarse as with all things digital, there are ways of getting the data out, but its a pain in the ass. BTW, where exactly does the chip go?

if you open your glove box, youll see a plastic "ceiling" inside it. Take teh two screw out holding teh plastic, then youll see a metal box - thats teh ECU (brain). you have to pull that out, disconnect the wiring harness, open it up, adn replace the chip...

it only took us 30min to do. pretty simple really.
