Question Gas prices

What are you guys paying for gas? A couple of places around here are trying to charge a $1.80+ a gallon, but that is okay because no one shops there!

The thing is, though, that even the places that are usually "cheap" are hovering around $1.50...

Few other countries require their workers to commute the same distances as workers in the U.S., and those that do have far better public transportation...

And, as for the taxes... the gas stations around here all claim that the reason their gas prices are so high is the taxes. The only problem with that is that gas taxes in California add up to around $.45... these gas stations aren't paying $1.10 a gallon...

when i lived in spain, gas was over $1.00 per liter... that figures about $4 per gallon. (exchange rate wasnt always the same, but pretty close).... oh, adn 7 years ago when i left, they were JUST importing unleaded gas... imagine that.

Gas stations make less than 10 cents per gallon (if their lucky!). What pisses me off is how the oil companies (i.e. exxon-mobil) set the prices. In one mobil it'll be 1.50 and right down the block it'll be 1.40.

Hmmm, but why is it that, if I rend a tank and buy from a distributor--even though it is in bulk, I would only be paying around $1 a gallon?

And if the oil companies are pushing prices up, why are there some places in the country, I think OK is one of them, where you can get gas for around $1 to $1.10 a gallon?

It just doesn't make sense...

All I know is, my next car is going to be a hybrid...

interesting facts on taxes (all from www.gaspricewatch.com -- great website, Tommy!):

in the US, tax makes up about 29% of the purchase price of gasoline.
in contrast, in the UK, France, and Germany, tax is ~75% of the purchase price. even in japan, the tax is about 55% of the cost.

the price without tax is within a few cents/liter in all the countries except japan.

as far as state-to-state variations within the US, CT tops everyone (36 cents), followed by RI (29), MT (27), PA (25.9), WV (25.35), ID (25). at the low end, we have GA, AL, and WY at 7.5, 8, and 9, respectively.

all of this is in addition to the 18.4 cents of federal tax.

just some random facts....but i found them interesting
