How hard is it to install an alarm?
In ten years of having a respectable stereo, my subs have been stolen three times-the most recent being two weeks ago. So, I'm thinking about installing an alarm. I have avoided them since they tend to go off at irritating times.
So, how complex is it to install one, or should I defer to the chaps that do it on a daily basis?

Depends on the alarm system...and I would definitely defer it to the pro's. Clifford and Alpine alarms are notoriously difficult to install, taking 4 - 6 hrs for a pro and then you can get tons of trouble. FOr example, my clifford alarm was installed by Circuit city and yet there still was numerous problems, including the brain getting destroyed twice. When i worked at Good guys, I used to go out in the install bay and watch them do the install work...its definitely more than a weekend warrior wants to underake. This coming from someone who installs car stereo stuff a lot.

i agree with ufcrusher, depending on the alarm unit. the only easy to install alarm systems are the factory plugnplay type units. some bmw's have this where the car is already stock with all the wiring and the alarm is just the brain which you plug in.

I feel for you man. My car was burglarized twice. They took the sound systems and the CDs. I wish they had at least left the CDs... Probably 200 CDs taken... All original.

Thanks... At the time, I had only CDs made from MP3's in the changer, so I lost no music. The glass mess was most irritating, and they took something far more important than stereo equipment (which I cannot post here for security/legal issues). I decided to go entirely MP3 in my car-so I bought a nice-ish JVC MP3 CD player-should be in my little Integra this weekend. Now to rip two decades of CDs.... ![]() |

In general, not too-too hard if you know your way around the car. HOWEVER, they're very difficult to install well. There's a difference.

I would put an alarm on before I put rims on. I would put an alarm in first, before anything. after you have that baby in, then I would feel comfortable doing whatever cosmetic to the car... |
