So, my GF wants a truck...

I've been talking with her about it, and apparently, she wants to buy herself a truck.

Now, before anyone jumps the gun, I will say this: she is one of the few people I know that could actually USE a truck as more than just a grocery getter.

With that said, I'm trying to get some ideas to work with her on. She doesn't want a full-sized (I only really know about full-sizd trucks), but she says that a lot of the compact trucks are too small for her. From what I can tell, she wants a truck about the size of a Tacoma. It seems like some of the Rangers are alright as well, given that they have enough clearance.

Any suggestions or ideas?

I agree with DF and Forrest Gump... The Dodge Dakota is a good compromise between full size and mini-trucks. Also, you can get in just about any configuration of cab (regular, extended, quad) and engine (V-6 and two v-8's). A little more expensive than the Chevy/Ford counterparts but they seem to hold their value pretty well...

Well, she definitely needs a 4x4, but I think I might need to give her a few pointers before she uses it.

Anyway, I pointed out the Dakota to her, and I don't think that she wants a truck that large. I don't know, really, I'm trying to work from her point of view. I think I'm really just going to have to take her around, look at some different models, and test drive.

That said, DONT BUY NISSAN TRUCKS.

Honestly, I think it has to do with the tires and the lift. I think she is basing what she likes/dislikes on the height rather than the actual body size. I mean, as far as I'm concerned, Rangers, Tacomas, and S-10s are all about the same size, but when I point different models out to her, she feels that some are bigger or smaller than others.

I might be wrong, but it seems to me that Tacomas come with bigger standard tires and maybe a higher lift. That might be why they look bigger than an out-of-the-factory Ranger or S-10.

Like I said, I'm working from her perspective, and she is the one buying the truck. I, personally, think she would be happy with a compact truck, but I don't think it can be one of the base models.

She might wanna look at a Ford Edge 4x4 or any other 4x4 truck... they generally tend to have a higher ground clearance than their "standard" counterparts.

BTW... Dakotas are STILL the best.

Yeah, I was confused at first, myself. Well, as long as she has 4 wheel drive and the ground clearance, I think she'll be happy. Well, she wants a few other things, but I'm not sure if it would be best to have those put on by someone other than the dealer.

Oh, btw, is that Dakota in the picture yours? Dunno why, but I always pictured yours as being red... Dodge Red.

Buy your truck in the poorest neighborhood you can find. The dealer will be so happy to make a sale he will throw in for free some extras like bedliner, cap, cruise control etc.

You say she doesn't like the size of the Dakota/Tacoma because they are too tall, yet one of the deciding factors is having enough ground clearance and 4WD. The reason that these trucks are taller is BECAUSE they have larger tires and slightly more lift in order to GET ground clearance. You can't have it both ways... If you want a lower truck, you'll either have to go with a compact (sacrificing ground clearance for lower overall height) or a 2WD version of the mid-size trucks...

I think you are falling into the same trap that DF and I did. The Dakota is larger than any other compact truck, bodywise, and that is why my GF doesn't like it. Actually, the Dakota is pretty near the size of a F150.

And I said that my GF does like the Tacoma as far as size goes. The thing is, she is actually making a distinction between, say, a slighty lifted Ranger with bigger tires and one that is not. So, basically, to conclude, she is looking for a compact truck that is a 4x4, has slightly larger tires, and is slightly lifted.

yo, so it seems she's already made up her mind about the tacoma. just say she's smart, and made a good choice and make sure the dealer doesn't rip her off

Then you should check out the Chevy S-10 ZR2...

From zr2.com :

If you are wondering what makes a regular S-10 a RPO ZR2, the following is the list of the factory modifications:
RPO ZR2 only full ladder-type frame with modified suspension mounting points which provide:
100mm wider track (3.9 inches wider than regular S-10)
Three-inch suspension height increase
Enhanced front (7.25" ring gear) and rear (8.5" ring gear) axles w/ 3.73:1 rear-axle ratio
Larger wheel and axle bearings
31 x 10.5R-15 LT/C black wall off-road tires (BFG A/Ts on pickups and BFG Long Trails on BlaZeR2)
46mm gas pressurized Bilstein Monotube shocks
Rear axle track bar (pickups) / rear sway bar (BlaZeR2)
Wheel flares (black on S-10 pickups and BlaZeR2 / body-color on Sonoma pickups)
33mm (early model) / 28mm (late model) front anti-sway bar
Skid plates

The Vortec 4.3L V-6 is one of the best V-6's around...190 HP

Good looking smaller truck...

well, i guess with what you're trying to say, the tacoma fits:

Exterior:

Length: 184.4 in.
Width: 66.5 in.
Height: 67.7 in.
Weight: 3320 lbs.
Wheel Base: 103.3 in.
Ground Clearance: 11 in.

vs the dakota:
Exterior:

Length: 196 in.
Width: 71.6 in.
Height: 67.3 in.
Weight: 3909 lbs.
Wheel Base: 112.1 in.
Ground Clearance: 8.1 in.

although for me, i'd take the dakota any day...
unless i had this option:

Thanks, guys... this is the kind of info I was looking for.

Also, after doing a little looking, the Tacoma might have the best price on what meets her needs. I didn't see that coming!

try the caddy EXT - an ass-ugly POS checking in at $50k+

you'd have to be crazy (or a GM exec) to buy one of those things
