Anybody actually use the O/D button?
I no longer drive auto tranny. With manual tranny, I've learned to double clutch and down shift in order to get good acceleration when passing. I always knew I could do a similar thing with auto tranny with the O/D button, but never bothered to learn. Does anybody use the O/D button for this purpose? How do you use it?

i don't gotz one, but on rentals...use it all the time... (cuz they always give you the weak engine cars).
as you're going...just hit it....the rpm's go up... and bam, you're accelerating... automatic transmission is for dummies. |

the final drive on most cars is usually a 1:1 ratio, but usually overdrive uses a lower ratio which is used for better gas milage. this will also reduce torque and horsepower. turning off overdrive will shift the transmission to a lower gear which is usally has a 1:1 ratio which increases torque and hp. thats why you get a boost when you switch out of overdrive.
o/d can put stress on the engine but not under normal driving conditions. driving uphill or hauling a heavy load can definately put strain on the engine when in o/d. basically o/d is for cruising and nothing else. when carrying a heavy load o/d should be switched off, but driving normally the trans should automatically downshift when accelerating or driving uphill. |

Hey I've got a question about that!! I've driven sport shift cars and when you shift down, don't you get a little engine breaking? Doesn't that slightly hinder your ability to get quick acceleration? With manuals, you can blip the throttle so that the down shift is smooth and with minimal engine breaking. Then you can get acceleration without knocking the drivetrain. Can you achieve that with sports shift? Maybe I was just driving a cheap sport shift car... |

The O/D button is great. I use it all the time when driving like a madman on winding roads. It's similar to downshifting when entering a turn, then i hit the button again when i come out of the turn. Great fun, though I don't know how detrimental this is to the car.
