insurance question
I have this argument with my dad and i want to know what you guys think
THis is pretty much the thing, i'm saying if i borrow his car, and god forbid something happens that isn't my fault the insurance, full collison, will still cover the damages. He says it will cause nothing but problems. Ideas, thoughts, comments?

The answer is...it depends on your insurance company. For example, certain insurance companies drop your coverage to the state minimum when its not the drivers listed for the car. If you think about it logically, you are insuring the car rather than the person, but people are being listed as the primary driver and secondary drivers.
Additionally, if the car is leased, especially with higher end cars, they may have policies that you signed stating that you wont allow anyone else to drive the car. In the end its going to depend on a) his insurance (and what state law allows) b) whether the car is leased or purchased (with the former maybe having an effect) and c) your dads comfort level concerning you driving his car. So good luck convincing him.

It will cause complications/ problems. Make sure the Car has insurance as well as yourself. Three weeks back, my brother switch vehicles with me, and we both have insurance, and we both had each other’s insurance papers. Not more than a few days afterwards, he got pulled over for speeding (of course, he didn’t take his radar detector out of his own car and I don’t need one). He said he had no problem, he just showed both of the insurance papers. The car was worth less than 10,000 but it sounds like you have more to wager.

the car is in fact leased, my dad has no problem with me driving it, but he doesn't let me because he is afraid about the insurance... then again it's weird cause he changes his mind a lot, some days i can take it some days i can't.
Just odd, in any case i drive my own car, just sometimes his is more conviniet because he has a spot in the garage and i park outside |

uuhh..maybe this is too obvious..why don't you just contact both of your insurance companies and find out what's covered.

As long as you're not excluded from the policy, you should be okay. Unless of course you have a policy which excludes anyone else from driving.

What need to watch out for is if you go with a smaller insurance company, you won't be covered if you drive to a state the company isn't licensed to do business in.
So for instance in my case..i have some cheapie insurance that's licensed to do biz in California. I recently went to hawaii and thought i could save some money on the rental car insurance by using the liability that i'm already paying for in California. But unfortunately my company doesn't do business in hawaii and i got stuck paying for it again. |
