Thumbs up Thoughts on the New Z

I am looking at a new car... Trying not to spend to much.. but i might go crazy and get the new z... it would be the basic model... i am thinking black and manual and no spoiler, cause it looks pretty bad i would say.
any thoughts for cars that cost and less?
other thoughts were the eclipse, but i heard it handles poorly.. or maybe an acura.

Just curious what people are happy with and not happy with.

What are we talking about here? A BMW Z3? A BMW Z4? A BMW Z8?

I like the G35C better than the 350Z.

240z = best Z ever made.

the 350z is some what over-rated. If you are looking for performance, get something else. If you can wait, there are rumors that they are going to release a turbo 350z. Don't forget that you can pick-up a 1991 or later 300zx twin-turbo for under $10,000.

350Z and G35 coupe have the same engine & power output, just that the G coupe is heavier due to luxury additions (and the little bench for a backseat), which kinda slows it down a lil.

for other choices besides the Z, why not check out what we chose in the "what would u buy" thread, maarchk? :-)

I like the G35, but 350z track edition is quite nice.

$34K is quite a bit of money for the track edition.

The G35C only has 280 hp comparing to 285 hp as in the 350Z. The G35C is heavier but it's more luxurious and the Infinity service is excellent while Nissan service ranks last in the industries.

The G35c also comes with better tires, so it tends to have better lateral grip (that's why the difference in the road tests).

Black Z in manual. Very classy.

Cut off about $4K and get the performance version. You'll only be missing an ugly-ass spoiler and breaks.

They do have the same engine but the engine in the Z is in a different state of tune. Here are the specs:

G35 Coupe:
Horsepower 280 @ 6,200 RPM
Torque 270 lb-ft @ 4,800 RPM

Curb weight:
Base model 3,416 lbs
Leather model 3,422 lbs
Leather 6MT model 3,435 lbs

Z:
Horsepower: 287 hp @ 6,200 rpm
Power: 274 lb-ft @ 4,800 rpm

Curb Weight:
Varies from 3,188 to 3,479 depending on if you get an auto tranny, the touring pkg, the performance pkg, etc....

I dont know about u guyz, but i hate the way the 350Z inside looks and feels cheap. The door handles, door panels are all cheap looking plastic. Im thinking its probably for weight reduction, but i wouldnt dump out $30k for a plastic lined car.
My brother almost bought a 350z, but he picked up a Manual 2001 BMW 330ci, for $25k, the car had 14k miles on it.

Or Mazda Rx8!!!!
2004 Mazda Rx8

Ive sat in this beauty, and i really really want one. Too bad im a broke college student. When they say room for 4adults, they dont lie. Sporty and practical.

I think the largest issue of concern would be the cost of insurance for the Z. A G35 will cost a lot more than a base Z. The Z still turns heads even here in So Cal. I haven't heard anything about a boosted Z, but GReddy already has a twin turbo kit for it that should be CARB certified soon. I wouldn't worry too much about Nissan's poor service reputation as that car shouldn't be in the shop much anyways.

Nissan had to keep the price down somewhere when they're offering a 287hp motor and sleek styling for under $30K.

I would take a new Z over a 2001 3 series any day. How many horses does the 330 put out anyways?

THe 330ci, is 225-245 hp. Im Not %100 sure which one. But ive been in both of these cars, and i can say that the 330ci pulls a lot harder. And u really cant compare to the ultimate driving machine. O and u cant put anyone in the back of ur Z.

It does seem that BMW horsepower is better than others. It just seems more efficent.

The 330ci puts out 225hp at 5900rpm, and 214lb/ft torque at 3500rpm.

i guess it depends on what you want. my roommate was looking solely at a BMW 325i and Audi A4 CVT. he decided one day to try out the G35c just for kicks and now he's driving it. i came down with him from SF (which was the only place in CA that had the exact model he wanted) and that car is SWEET. i could have gotten a BMW, but the bang for buck G35c was what he wanted. 280 HP! and it drives so sweet.

It really does depend. As you mentioned, some people are more concerned about the blingbling than performance. Each buyer has his or her own set of values.

Ur right, but i dont think over all the Z is that much faster than a 330ci. Anyone know the 1/4 Mile Time of the 350z?

R&T:

Z:
5.6 seconds 0-60
14.3 seconds at 99.4mph in the quarter

330ci:
6.2 seconds 0-60
14.8 seconds at 95.4mph in the quarter

C&D:
Z:
5.4 seconds 0-60
14.1 seconds at 101mph in the quarter

330ci:
6.4 seconds 0-60
? seconds at ?mph in the quarter

Automobile:
Z:
5.5 seconds 0-60
14.1 seconds at 101mph in the quarter

330ci:
7.0 seconds 0-60
15.3 seconds at ?mph in the quarter

None of those tests were head to head though, so they're kind of a poor comparison. Track conditions, temperature, pressure, humidity, drivers, launch policies, and loads of other variables can change those times.

I've driven a few 330's though, very disappointing; even slower than my MR2.

Wow ur informative. Im guessing the 1 second time diff is due to heavyness of the 330's luxury.

Nothing drives like a BMW...but then again, nothing drives like G35 coupe with 280hp underneath that hood
As much as I like BMWs, I'd take the G35 coupe because is thousands cheaper. I do like the BMWs interior better. Definitively more plush, BUT I'd be willing to sacrifice that for some solid performance.
I'm wouldn't mind the Z, but its just not very practical.

Personally, I couldn't care less which name sounds better. To me, the exhaust note of the Z sounds better. I have a WRX STi as my wallpaper on my laptop and people at school always asks me what kind of car it is. I tell them it's a Subaru and they give me a funny look. Do I care and change my wallpaper to a BMW or a MB? No, because I know what that bad boy is capable of.
