transmission question

what mechanical differences are there between fwd and awd transmissions, besides where they're placed in a car's layout?

I don't think there's any fundamental difference between the 2 transmissions. The AWD may have some beefier components, but function of the two transmissions are pretty much the same. AWD vehicles have additional components (transfer case, vicous couplings, limited slip differientals..etc).
