New 2004 Volvo S40/V50

Yah, I know you guys aren't really hot on Volvos here. It takes a special bunch of people to like Volvos

But, in any case, here are the official pictures of the new Volvos.

It's based on the global Ford P1 platform, and it's the same platform as Ford's Focus and Mazda's 3

Remember, Ford Europe did a good job engineering platforms, and the cars are pretty unique to each other. When you see this Volvo, it's nothing like the other other 2 cars except in wheelbase (width and overall length, as well as height and rooflines and basic structures are different, while things like water tanks and such share a common design.)

The mazda 3s are made in the Hofu plant in Japan, the Ford Focus Europes are made in German and Spain, while the Volvos S40s will be made in Sweden and Belgium.

In any case, the speculation is that this will have a suspension that is shared between the Mazda 3 and the Ford Focus.
Designed for AWD, specifically Haldex (same AWD system used in all the new upcomming Audis and BMWs, as well as MB as their being released)

Volvo Specific:
Engine range including GDI engines, and a 2.5 litre 5 cylinder Turbo that makes up to 220 hp, mated with AWD and a five or a six speed.

Unknown if an "R" version with 300 hp and AWD will make it into production.

Basis for small coupe, "mini-mpv" (probably euro and asia specific), and small SUVs, as well as the standard estate (wagon) and saloon (sedan)

Well, here are some pictures:

(Volvo traditional Nav systems lift from the center channel speaker)

Bigger than the current Mitsubishi/Volvo S40 design, and i'm guessing slated to compete in the small european car market here in the United States

not bad for a Passa....I mean Volvo. The C70 coupe is still the only good looking Volvo ever built.

count me in with that "special bunch of people" group.

looks nice...
yeah...there are some resemblances to the passat, but for the most part...stays consistent with the current volvo design. they're constantly making it more rounded...and well.. passat is as round as they get

i like the 5 under the hood...and i'm guessing the turbo will be the only one worth getting...

i'd like to see pictures of the wagon.

I think this is a nice and sleek looking volvo. I did it. Now hopefully the engine is something half decent. Not very impressed with the S40's 1.9T version if you ask me.

THe new engines will be traditional Volvo engines. All the volvo engines save the 1.9t, is designed in house with cooperation with porsche YEARS ago. The 1.9t is a P-O-S Mitsubishi engine. Good riddens those things are gonna be gone.

The new S40 should be topped with that turbo i5, the one that started in the 850 and is used all over the place. It's bored out to i5, and is in LPT mode. The HPT version of that engine is 300 hp and 295 lb/ft torque.

V10 cosworth engine was developed a few years ago...shelved, was developed to be a 4.0 litre super compact engine. Was rumored to make 350 hp and like 425 lb/ft torque

New V6 or i6 developed off of a jaguar block, coming soon

V8 yamaha H.O. engine for the next S80 and MLU on the XC90, rumored at 350-400 hp

BTW, Volvos should all have Haldex AWD on all the models except for the most basic entry level cars by 2007. Their cars were designed for haldex AWD since the P2 platform in 1998. That means, they were thinking about it since 1994.

All their new cars can get AWD , but not on all engine choices. That will change soon. 4C active chassis should also slowly become available across the board.
