So. Cal: Anyone else goto D1?
Today i went to D1, the first drift compitition in the USA. It was hosted by Option Magazine, and sponsered by Yokahama tires. Just wondering how many other GA'ers were there.

It was a very good show, they had the drift grand prix, and a car show. It was the first drift compitition in the US, but it was still great. I will post pics by wednesday, im borrowing my friends digicam, and havent uploaded them yet.

I see the US is finally catching on to the fun. Drifting is quite a phenomenon in Japan. It's extremely fun/cool to watch. But I've always wondered. Is drifting actually faster than non-drifting? Or is the entertainment/artistic/acrobatic value the only elements that keeps drifting so popular? It's a major element of Rally Racing, but I very rarely see it done on hard tracks.
If you don't know what "drifting" is, search your favorite P2P app for a file called Ruch-Montage.wmv (approx. 38 MB). It's one of the many good clips out there, containing some great drifting action. Last edited by ArkiStan : 09-02-2003 at 06:11 AM. |

CarandModel.com covered the meet. D1 Grand Prix USA - Professional Drift Date: August 31, 2003 Location: Irwindale, CA Article: Mike Photos: Mike and Chris Wow, part 2! The D1 Grand Prix USA was an amazing success. Irwindale Speedway said it was the biggest event in the history of their track, topping 10,000 attendees. It was a great way to finish our hit and run trip to Los Angeles for 2 shows. Not so surprising was that many of the same cars that were at HIN also made it to the D1 Grand Prix. There were a ton of Japanese cars loaded with JDM parts and accessories along with many of the parts manufacturers themselves occupying vendor space in the pits and car show area. Many of the top professional drifters from Japan flew to the U.S. to compete with each other and the best America had to offer. Unfortunately when we booked our outbound flights for Sunday we didn't realize this event was until 11pm and had to leave early. Despite this, we still busted our asses in the heat to get photos for our members of nearly every car there.
