eclipse question

was looking up info on mitsu eclipses for the heck of it, and one site said the awd model (gsx) contains EIGHT CV joints. why would it need so many? and how badly would a single dead CV joint affect a gsx?

b/c i was thinking of getting an awd car for amateur rallycrossing, if not club racing. being a student severely limits my budget, so i'm not big on massive repairs (hence the question about dead CV joints on a gsx). but i wanted to look at other awd alternatives to imprezas. i was thinking of the awd isuzu impulse, but those are kinda hard to find. what were your impressions of the gsx when you drove/raced it, apex?

Lots of fun.

Pick the right struts, springs, sway bars, bushings combo. Make sure toe and camber are correct

The CV boots go once in awhile. Check em for leaks.

You can get them FAST for cheap. I only had limited experience with the GSX. Button Willow, Willow springs, EVOC, etc. Raced with Porsche Owner's Club of N.A. Skill makes a bigger difference than vehicle.

AWD makes for a very different track experience than RWD. You're traveling a very very different line. You're also on the gas WAY earlier and much harder than with other cars. Make sure your instructor knows how to drive AWD.

A properly set up GSX (or even GS-T) on R series racing compound (not even full racing slicks), will corner at nearly 1.3g's. We're talking 1.26 or so, both left and right.

Do not go over 17.5psi on 92 octane pump gas with stock MAF/injectors.

apex...what haven't you experienced in life???

stinkin...u know about everything...

anyways....one thing that might help with $$

the eclipse and talon were same exact cars. american cars always have a lower resale value...you'll get the same for for less by going american.

lol, as IF i can find 92 octane in the bay area.

wow, nearly 1.3? impressive. would h-rated tires do, or should i expect chunking from h's?

heh, about the instructor thing - i was at an scca rallycourse class near bakersfield, brought my rwd volvo s90 to the course and nearly every instructor thought it was front drive, no matter how much i insisted it wasn't. they kept telling me to get off the gas when i should've been stomping on it, and as a result i either stopped in the middle of a drift or completely spun out.

Yes, I'm the master of the unimportant, knower of all things trivial.

The average h rated tires would probably not work well. They do vary quite a bit, but I wouldn't suggest them.

Always remember, the biggest problem normally exists between the steering wheel and the seat.

Yeh, my friend used to own a Talon AWD turbo. I think he upped the boost to 15 PSI on stock turbo, upgrade the suspension all the way around, not cat no muff, Upgraded brake too. He consistantly won street class auto cross and put less than 4k including the car. And the car still past inspection so he was able to drive it on the street, it was funny to see people reaction when we were able to take off in the wet, then stop on a dime. (BTW my county doesn't smog, it is freakin awsome)

Two constant velocity joints in each halfshaft or axle, four axles since it is AWD...

Here's more info: http://members.aol.com/carleyware/library/cvjoint1.htm

There's TONS of Diamond-Star stuff on the 'net...

I recently sold my '96 GSX and never had a problem.
