Question Best SoCal place for transmissions....

Well, it looks like my tranny is finally going out. yippeee!

Anyway, I've been quoted $2,000 for a new and $1,000 for a used (used, mind you, not rebuilt) transmission. Not to mention, my tranny is a manual. I'm going to call around some more, though, because I think those prices are a little on the high side.

Any suggestions on where I might inquire about a replacement?

Ugh, my only other option would be to maybe try and trade it in. Either way, at this moment I can't afford option A or B.

Nope. That's why I've begun looking elsewhere.

I am regreting what I did.

My tranny was going so I took it to AAMCO. They said it was going to be a minimum of 500 to drop it to look at it. So they do that and tell me that it needs to be rebuilt. Now I was at the point pay 500 they put it back together and it isnt fixed or pay 2600 to rebuild!!! I told them that was way too much and eventually talked them down to 1800 plus 3 yr warranty. So did that

Then a few days later my EGR valve had to be replaced then my Fuel pump had to be replaced. So i have spent over 3000 in the past few months. I am so wishing I had sold it.

The thing is, as much trouble as it seems, it is still cheaper than buying a new vehicle. My problem is that I can't really afford a new vehicle either.... The dilemma continues....

What kind of car is it?

What are the symptoms of the tranny?

It's a '94 Escort, and it uses a Mazda tranny. I haven't checked on exactly what model, but I've seen rebuilt/remanufactured Mazda trannies for about $700.

Anyway, symptoms....

It kicks out of gear, especially in 5th and at higher rpms.
It has trouble shifting into 1st and Reverse from the neutral position.
It sounds like there are a bunch of little, metal guys dancing around and having a party in there... and it sounds like everyone is invited.

The shifting problem sounds like a stretched cable or misadjusted cable.
However, the noise doesn't sound good. Is the noise the same with the clutch engaged or with the clutch pedal down to the floor?
If you ride the clutch a lot, it could just be the throwout bearing.

As long as the car is moving forward, regardless of whether or not the clutch is engaged, the little guys are rattling.

It's probably one or more bearings in the tranny.I am not sure if worn synchronizers would rattle like that. Either way, it sounds like a rebuild or a replacement.
