Need advice on my charging system

I have a 1976 Dodge van, the battery drained, I don't think it's a bad battery. The alt. gauge only read on discharge and never moved toward charge. Any suggestions how to test the alternator, regulator or battery? I don't think this had anything to do with my problem but I tried in vain to jump-start a car today, I don't think I harmed my van trying to give the jump, but it is a possibility. My first guess is that it's not the battery, I'm currently charging it and it seems to take a charge nicely.

Drive down to Autozone or Oreillys (or just about any autoparts store) and ask them to test them for you.

It ended up being my regulator from Autozone for under $11. I tried to have them test it but they were too busy and not enough staff, they told me to come back but while I was there I bought the regulator and I got lucky.
