anyone with a GM replace their head unit?

Particularly if your stock radio said RDS on it...

I went to circuit city yesterday to get it replaced...and they were trying to charge me 60 bucks for a harness because supposedly, the RDS controls chimes of other things...as well as other effects with the car's computer....

anyone replace their units?

anyone get around this 60 buck charge?

sounds like you are getting ripped off. Be cheaper just to rewire everything yourself than to pay 60 bucks. Try BB.

If you are confident you can order your own harness wiring kit and install it yourself. When I bought my first stereo they charged me, I think 15 for a harness and wiring kit, and since I bought a new stereo of the same type, they just popped out the old one and conected the new one and I was out of there in 2 minutes.

They have good info and I think will have the wiring necessary.

for the past few years chevy has been incorporating the door open chime and other chimes into the stereo for the past few years. There is something new about the 03s that is different also. That is prolly why it was so expensive (and 60 sounds right for that part)

yeah...that's what I've been reading...

but the guy at circuit city said that it can affect airbags as well...

!?!?!??!?!

anyways...others on the online commuity say that nobody has really tested what goes wrong (like airbags) when you replace the head unit, so you can play it safe and buy the 60 buck harness or you can keep your old headunit in the trunk wiring it up from the front....to keep the stuff working...or...just screw it and install it and don't worry abuot the chimes...

Ya, I read that about the airbags too. I can't believe anyone would do that. Hopefully its not true. No way I would be driving around with an extra radio in my car. Thats ridiculous.

so you're saying that the harness is necessary?

If you want to retain facory wiring, factory dinger, and the way the radio stays after you turn the igniton off until you open the door, yes.

If you want to spend hours rewiring for power, no. The harness does make it really easy.

but they do have harnesses that'll give you power and basic functionality to the radio, but not give you the dings and all that good stuff...

The 03's had just came out when my stereo was put in, so the only harness that was available was the expensive one.

The airbag functionality and whatever BS that guy told you is of no concern, if you dont want the dinger, use the cheap harness.
