$13,000 Wwyd
SO I am going to buy a vehicle in the $13,000-$14,000 (out the door) range. I am eyeing a 99 Jeep Wranger Sahara (60,000 miles) or should i get a Nissan frontier 5 speed, extended cab. New zero miles. I don’t care for the looks of the frontier, and the Jeep looks awesome with larger tires and 3in body lift. I know the history of the Jeep, my brother used to own it 3 months ago and he was good to it and the dealer is just now getting around to selling it. The jeep will come out to be about a grand cheaper. My goal of either vehicle is to be a reliable daily driver for next 3 years, then sell it. The Jeep has already lost a bulk of its value and they tend to keep their value. Frontiers tend to lose their value just as bad as Fords.

I drive a 2000 Sahara and I love it. 3 tops and 2 sets of doors--I can configure it according to what I'm doing and the weather. Mine's only got 16,000 miles on it (one of the benefits of living on an island
). The Jeep 4.0 is an awesome motor--virtually bulletproof. Only real downside is lack of hauling/storage space and that unless you are running a hard top and full doors, the Wranglers are a prime target for theft. Personally, I just never leave anything in it that someone would want to steal, and with no top or upper doors (most of the time), it's never locked. I wish there were more opportunities to 4-wheel with it around here, but I guess that'll have to wait until I move back to the mainland. As long as you take care of the Jeep, it'll hold it's value fairly well. Is the Frontier 2 or 4 wheel drive? If it's 2WD, that's one more factor working against its value.

The frontier is 2-wheel drive. Also my other options are just to buy a car or truck with the $3000 I have in my pocket. I can get a 97 ranger 4x4 for 1700 from a friend and it is in good running shape. He is getting rid of it because he has 5 vehicles and it has 140,000 highway miles. Then with the remainder I could get my second choice of vehicle a '77 280z that runs. This way I have reliability and if one car fails the other is there. This might be there better option because it keeps me out of debt. I only work 20 hours a week (the most they will let me work) at the current moment in time. I have really been wanting a Z car for the past several years, but now I have the money and opportunity. So I guess the main question is, stay out of debt, or get in debt.
Your opinions are greatly appreciated And CynJon has a NICE Jeep. I am afraid to ask what you had to pay for it to get it shipped to HI. |

Stay out of debt! If you can pay cash, do it. You can easily drive that 97 Ranger for 3 years, and still be able to sell it for $1000+.
If you buy a $13,000 vehicle, I can almost guarantee there will come a time in the near future where you regret having a car payment. If you pay cash for the Ranger, and you later regret it - you just sell the truck! |

I'm surprised no one has yet mentioned how the jeep is usually on the top 5 list of cars driven by gays. . . not that, that should matter or that there is anything wrong with that. I think the only place I would buy a jeep is if I was living in hawaii or another island where an open top and 4wd would be the best thing to have. Other than that living in san diego and doing a lot of freeway driving, that would get very tiresome fast.

*thinks to self* then relizes that spigidygak is talking about the brand Jeep. Because I do not any gays that drive a CJ or a wrangler. Most gay people i know are into really nice clean rides like tahoe's and navigators

back to the topic of discussion, isn't the Jeep's insurance much hire than that of a Nissan truck?

Yes it is. I went and drove the nissan frontier king cab 4 cyl. 5 speed. I was not very impressed. The clutch felt like ****. It engaged high and didn't feel like i like a clutch to feel. The darn thing didn't even have a back bumper. I think I am going to wait a couple months until I move to San antonio and then I can get a better price. I think I will pay more because I will have a better paying job and get a Sierra. I like the truck and GM's trucks have a better resale value than most other trucks. Also if I wait until the end of the year I can get a better deal on 2003 model's.
