Bad Speedometer Sensor

Yesterday, my '99 Breeze wouldn't go out of first gear. The engine was revving like crazy when I was doing just 35 MPH. I noticed that the speedometer wasn't working and the Engine light went on.

I had a similar problem in a '99 Breeze I had several years ago, but I don't recall the problem with the tranny when the speedometer died. I repaced the sensor in that earlier car myself and everything worked.

Since it was around 25 degrees and there was snow on the ground, I decided to take it to my friend's garage instead of attempting the repair myself.

Well, he put a scanner on the car to check the codes. There were several codes: one for the speedometer sensor and another for a low gear problem

When he told me that it may be the tranny plus the sensor, I gulped and all I could see were dollar signs going to a transmission place.

He tried to get a hold of the guy he knows who does transmissions to find out if the sensor could cause the tranny to not go into higher gears but there was no answer.

So I called a friend of mine and he said a new speedometer sensor would solve everything.

Guess what, it solved the low gear problem.

My friend, the garage mechanic said he learned something yesterday. He said he bet that a lot of people have probably had this problem and an unscrupulous transmission place would shaft them for a new trans while just repacing the sensor.

It only cost me 40 bucks. What a relief!!

Computer-controlled automatic transmissions rely on that very crucial sensor to decide when and how to shift.

This sensor has a reputation in Chrysler products for being a "high-failure rate" item IMHO. I'd be willing to bet your local Chry/Ply/Dodge dealer stocks more than one.

Playing Monday Morning QB is easy, but I will say that, had you brought the car to me, the speed sensor would have been the first thing I would have looked at as well. This is the only circuit/component I can think of on that particular vehicle that could have manifested the two symptoms (no shift and no speedometer)...
