2004 Volkswagen Phaeton

So a lot of people in my neighborhood work at Volkswagen/Audi, and a guy who lives down the street from me is driving one of the new VW Phaetons.

Now, don't get me wrong, it's a great looking car, the features are amazing, and you can get it with a 420HP W12.

But seriously... who's going to pay $75,000 for a Volkswagen? Why wasn't this in the Audi line?

how good of an engine is the W12 anyway? from what i heard, the W8 was a bit underpowered and didn't really act like an 8-cylinder.

Many of the enthusiast magazines are asking the very same question.

Are you in or near Auburn Hills? I just found out that I have to start spending a week per month in Flint :shudder:...

OTOH, my wife was born in Mount Clemens...

I won't veer any farther off-topic...

Yeah, I live just north of there.

Ewww... what do you have to do in Flint? That's certainly not the most attractive part of the state.

Isn't the Phaeton the same as the A8?

Not only are many mags questioning VW's actions, but they're totally panning the structure and build quality of the new A8 and Phaeton.

Why does the bodies quiver over bumps?

well...the thing is VW is the people's car...until the people get rich.

they get rich and then they go and buy bmw's and benz's.

VW wants to keep those people with the same brand.

They share a lot of components, but the W12 is unique to the Phaeton.

Ah, Grand Blanc is nice... very rural/suburban. Just remember to go SOUTH to find civilization, not north!

VW is building the Phaeton in an all new, mostly glass factory constructed just for Phaeton.

Yeah, and if I go south, stay north of 8 Mile, right?

I've actually spent some time up there before. I did a similar gig in 1999 where I lived in an extended-stay motel just across the street from the Silverdome (between the Silverdome and the Chrysler Tech Training Center annex, west of I-75) for three months, flying home for a three-day break every other weekend.

Is there any reason they would a factory mostly glass? Seems like a big waste of money to me?

they aren't actually building the cars, as much as they are growing in this modern-day greenhouse/car factory
