Head unit recommendations?

Hey all,
Well i just realized that my old head unit is broken. After extensive surgery i decided that my old Alpine cdm-7833 will be put to rest. I was in a bad car accident, i got hit by an old lady driving on the wrong side of the road. while i was not hurt, the alpine was fatally wounded.

I put it in my new car a few nights ago, only to realize that the radio works, but the CD load mechanism is broken. I don't think its worth paying to get it fixed.

I'm looking for a new one, and i'm sure someone in here has boiught a good one they can recommend.

I want to spend $150-300. I don't have an amplifier in my car, but may soon, so a preamp out would be nice, but the speaker connections and good power coming out of the head unit are vital.

I would also like one that plays CD-R's with mp3's on it! I'm used to nice sound from Alpines and nice speakers.
Thanks!

JVC SX780

I love mine. Save some extra cash and get a decent amp and subs. Almost all in-deck amplifiers pretty much stink when compared to a decent 4-channel, full range amplifier. No multi-channel EQ, but I don't usually play with the bass/treble anyway.

Thanks Bires, that one looked sweet until I realized that it doesn't play MP3's. It has an Auxillary jack to plug in your own MP3 Player. One that plays MP3s burned to CDs would be awesome.

That Alpine looks really sweet. I'm going to try and find a deal on it . Its pretty pricey, pushing my budget a little bit. Its going in my commuter car.

I believe it does. I actually own the SX980, which is that unit's big brother. The aux port can use used for anything that has a line-in. I burn MP3s (VBR encoded with LAME with r3mix) onto CDRWs. It handles them like a champ.

The 980 Is MP3 Compatible (you can copy a bunch of MP3 files to the CD, without having to convert them to an audio CD)

But the 780 is not

But If you're so happy with yours, I think i'll go for that one. Its a good price. Thanks!

Must be an eye of the beholder kinda thing. I like functional head units. The appearance is less important to me, since I rarely even look down at it. My hand knows where the controls are, and that's what is important. Besides, a flashy head unit just screams "Steal Me!"

I am all about the Alpines baby.

I tried really hard to find the JVC that Bires was talking about, but no luck. It has been discontinued.

Well I settled on an Alpine 9803 that I picked up today at circuit city B&M for about $156. I just finished installing it and I LOVE IT!!!

I didn't get the MP3 Playing support like I wanted, but at the last moment i didn't feel like dropping an extra $100 on my commuter car.

Alpine quality is still the tits! I love this thing, amazing sound...
