"BBC Pays After TV Host Drives Into Tree"

LONDON (AP.org) -- It was a hit-and-run with a difference. The British Broadcasting Corp. said Saturday that it has paid compensation to a parish council after the star of one of the broadcaster's TV shows deliberately crashed into a tree in a church car park.

Jeremy Clarkson, the presenter of motor show "Top Gear," neglected to ask permission to smash a Toyota pickup truck into the 30-year-old white horse chestnut tree and left the village of Churchill without telling anyone.

The incident came to light when an eagle-eyed viewer recognized the location in southwest England and alerted the council when the program aired in January.

"We looked at the tree and saw red paint and glass so I contacted the BBC," said Pam Millward, the deputy chairwoman of Churchill Parish Council.

"I was amazed and annoyed at the cheek that they can turn up and damage the tree like that. They claimed they couldn't ask permission as there was nobody to ask but there's a notice board with numbers very nearby," she added.

Millward said the tree is badly scarred and that a tree expert has told the council it will probably suffer from woodworm and rot.

The BBC said it has "unreservedly apologized" to the council and sent a check for 250 pounds (US$470).

hehe... its that same toyota they were tearing up in the videos posted in the automotive forums.

for a sec there, i thought Clarkson had died or something...

If you do something illegal, you shouldn't video tape the event.
