It's actually a shift in both the supply and the demand curves. Several other states are actually requesting similar gasoline formulas that are used in California and refinineries are unable to keep up with the demand and the refineries sometimes produce other patroleum products during the winter months as typically the demand is different.

Angry gas

Didn't you guys hear? They've been "warning" (read conditioning) us for a price hike for weeks now. They ALWAYS do that so we won't react violently when it happens for no apparent reason.

I heard on the radio that two major refineries abruptly shutdown production, and that makes gas go up. I've kept watch the last several of years, and some refineries always shutdown right before consumer demand spikes.

Gas is way too expensive out here in California. Oil companies just want to make more money. Crude oil price is lower than last year but yet gas price is way over the top.

ouch.

most places are 1.65-1.70 for regular. my sister just started using costco gas and says she's been getting better gas mileage while spending 1.55 per gallon.

It's because there's an equation here that doesn't apply to easily to a lot of other urban parts of the country.

NOCAR=SCREWED=NOMASSTRANSIT.

Hence, we Californians bend over and take it like indentured servants of the auto and oil industry.

Its official, I just spend 30+ bucks filling up my 17 gallon tank. Up til now, the highest was 28 bucks. And to think when I was in Georgia back in 98, unleaded was .89 cents.

I left the Bay Area to move LA. Gas Prices are about the same, they were going up before I left, and they are still rising here. This should make my first commute to San Pedro fun. With traffic and stuff it should take me 1/2 a tank to get there tomorrow.

Its ok, I'd rather pay extra than being seen driving around in a Prius

Anyway, $2.39/gallon in So Cal South Bay Area for Premium today. I filled up for 2.22 last night at Costco, get this 14 gallons, around 32 bucks, pretty crazy. A Touareg TDI V10 sounds pretty damn good right about now.

You sir, are COMPLETELY wrong the highest point for oil costs within the last year was at about $32 per barrel when the Venezuelan strike happened in Dec 2002, spike lasted until Feb when it goes down to ~$25, Iraq=~28. Right now Oil closed at 36.37 for US light Crude.

Wherever you got your data, you need to tell them they are fulla schnitt.

Furthermore, oil companies DON'T base prices off of present or even current-past prices. THey base their prices off of futures in order to align their cost structure to what WILL happen. Just think, if a company were to price current petrolium distillate production off of yesterdays spot prices and not current replacement costs (futures contracts costs), they could potentially lose billions if a big price shock happened.

Example, if they paid $20 per barrel yesterday and today they price at $20, then their replacement costs today could potentially be $40, accounting standards demand that their mark to market their current inventory, thus, they would be f'd.

It'll come back down. People always freak out everytime there's a spike in gas prices, which happens every year, but it always comes back down. I fill up about once a week here in So Cal and I pay about $4 more per fill-up. That's about $20 more per month. That's just one less dinner out.

The WRX gets like 27mpg. What's so bad about that?

What are you talking about? My Accord V6 has a 28 mpg gas mileage on the freeway. BTW it uses regular gas.

It's not just a few cents more than regular... It's about 20 cents. My car mandates premium so I don't have a choice in the matter.
