Rock on Toyota. I'm really looking forward to the Toyota/Lexus line of hybrids due in 2004-2005. It seems they've really put a lot of research and development into their new hybrids.

This from the same company with the fugly Prius. Honestly though, I think Toyota is on top of the ball, what with the hybrid RX400 due out sooner than later and all. That is one ride I wouldn't mind blowing some cash, real or imaginary, on.

I wonder if the Lexus badge will surplant the Toyota one if it goes into production.

I wonder how much it's going to cost. Honda had a prototype hybrid making 400hp and having 42mpg mileage also (Dual Note I think).

What's great about the hybrid tech. is that they have already developed it to the point where they can get more power than the identiacal gas only engine with better mileage at the same time. This is how the Lexus Hybrid is supposed to be. We'll see if they spent the money to make this true.

Actually, if I had to guess, the Toyota brand will remain on this car. It's been publicly announced that Toyota has been designing their new models to appeal to a younger target market. A couple years ago they released the Corolla Sport version which had a different dash and lights than their regular Corollas.

What they probably will do is make the Lexus version of the car the same thing just $20K more

The Lexus RX400h uses the same hybrid synergy technology that empowers a combination of an internal combustion engine with the power of a V6 and a battery/electric motor to give combined torque of a V8 engine. I believe the RX400h actually has the 1 combustion engine and 2 electric motors to power itself.

Oh, and the RX400h is tentatively priced to be about $2K more than their regular RX330

I want one of these. I heard they seat 3, anyone else hear anything about that. I wonder if it's central driving position like a McLaren...

I wonder how much it will cost...

Could it be that much? It's supposed to be a Supra replacement. What was the MSRP on the early 90's supras?

Wow, Supras sold new around $50k? I've seen quite a few 93-97's lately, most for sale over $50k

Supras haven't really depriciated all that much.

As for this Volta, I too wonder about the price. If they--Honda and Toyota--over-price ugly economy cars simply because they have hybrid engines, I can't imagine what a sports car with a hybrid will cost.

Oh, and I'm guessing a sun roof isn't an option?

I don't know what are you talking about but the Civic hybrid looks just like the regular Civic. The upcoming Accord V6 hybrid, RX400h, and Hylander hybrid will look just like their gas power ones. As far as being overpriced, if they could sell the cars at high price and pple still want their products, why not? Companies are out there to make money for themselves and their stock holders.

Was making a joke mainly about the Prius. Please forgive the sarcasm and hyperbole.

And as for the being overpriced: the whole point of Hybrid cars is to make them available, and to have an "economy car" that costs over $20K is just ridiculous, especially when a lot of Americans--most notably those driving the worst offending smog vehicles--don't even make that much money in a year. Just because the car will save you money once you start driving it, it doesn't mean that it is worth an extra $6,000... and it certainly isn't enough on its own to make it an economy car.

As for companies wanting to sell what they sell at a price they want to sell it, that's fine. I'm not necessarily blaming the car companies. I do, however, blame the government for not working with those companies in a way that would make these cars more widely available to the public.

The Civic, Accord, RX400h and Hylander are all new or pre release models. The first hybrids like the Honda Insight and the Prius weren't all that great looking. It was like car companies went out of thier way to design fugly looking cars to put thier hybrid systems into. It probably had a lot to do with marketing so that people would notice them, but it has also backfired to some extent. While the people totally into the efficiency of it, or those who wanted to be on the bleeding edge would get it, most consumers wouldn't go for the complety different looks.

It seems like they have seen the error of thier ways and started to make changes.

All we need is a law requiring hybrid engines in all new cars by 2010 or something.

Gee that would suck considering a lightweight turbo bio-diesel powered car is more efficient in some cases and would most likely cost less to own.

Ok, when is my favorite Nissan Frontier gonna come out with a fancy new hybrid? I dig the 6 cylinders and the smooth ride, but better gas mileage would sell me for sure.
