front airbags don't deploy even when hit from the side... do they? if not, that explains why no airbags.
and no blood... maybe the driver was thrown from the car?

pioneer head unit. You can look at the gauges, 2200 rpm, speddomter looks to be at 90 kph. That is when I guess the engine ripped out.
PS: white sheets=bodies, or atleast parts fo bodies.

It would be interesting to see in slow motion how the car scraped the bark off the tree and the sheet metal wrapped itself around the trunk.

Not really... Driver and passenger airbags are designed to only trigger when a frontal inpact of sufficient force occurs within an area 30 degrees to the left and right of the centerline of the vehicle. Side impact and curtain bags would have triggered, were the vehicle in question so equipped. (Not that they would have done much good in this case...)

90 kph because yes, they are no american cars. Also MOST production family sedans do not go 90 mph at 2200 rpm.

i think its 90 mph for 2 reasons
- 90kph=60mph and i dont think thats fast enough to rip a car in half - the speedo needle is half way from 0 to the max speed. 180kph=111mph...dont know too many cars that top out at 111mph [not even my crappy civic] about 2200rpms, the driver probably was braking and that could explain the low engine rpms

One poster at the site notes how the scene looks staged because the emergency brake is pulled up. I can say from personal experience that this is natural, because in a situation where the car loses traction and starts spinning out of control, a novice driver's instinct will tend to lead him/her to do whatever it takes to bring the car to a stop, e.g. pull the hand brake, rather than regaining control of the vehicle.

well, you can pretty much forget "rationalizing" or deducing things from what you see in that picture. Theres soo much that happens so fast, you cant really tel what exactpy happened. The geforces that get placed on random parts of the car are crazy, and could make it do different things...
for example - it was a side impact, but the steering wheel is bent. The speedo could have froze at first impact, after the motor seperated, or sometime after in one of the flips that that half of the car was probably going through before it stopped. the e-brake - probably lifter because of g-forces. the face on the cd player - probably flew off at first impact. the bodies - probably thrown either after the car split, or possibly bounced back off the tree after the car split.

And the glass is where?
Besides the lack of blood, I also have a problem with: 1.no antifreeze/oil all over the engine compartment 2.no fuel spill on the tree/ground 3.the window appears to wrap AROUND the tree 4.no skid marks leading to the scene Last edited by Bires : 03-21-2004 at 07:33 AM. |

BTW: The ambulance appears to have "ESMORIZ" written on the side, which is a city in Portugal.

i know from personal experience that airbags dont always go off. a few months ago i was in an accident where my car was hit on the front passenger corner and neither driver or passenger airbag went off. it was a 96 bmw. never found out what happened, but the airbags wouldnt have really helped anyways.

I'm just being an ******* and nitpicking again, but one thing that bothers me....
Considering there was enough speed/momentum to rip the car in half, the fragments of the car seem to be gather around too close to the car. It would seem like the broken parts should be covering a much larger area around the accident site. But then again, as Nano mentioned, without a degree in physics, how would I know what kind of dynamics come into play when a car is ripped apart? |

woudl seem that most of the kenetic(?) energy of the car was used up stressing the metal and bending it in half. Just a guess.
It DID seem like a short distance to travel to me also. |
