Shared Platforms

Just got the new Motor Trend. They have an editorial regarding vehicles which share the same platform (chassis, drivetrain,etc.).

Obviously, everyone knows that the Chevy Trailblazer, the GMC Envoy, Olds Bravada share the same platform. Also, the new Buick Rainier and the Izusu Ascender utilize this platform, too.

What is interesting is that the Saab 9 convertible, Malibu Maxx, and Pontiac's new G6 sedan are similar.

Also, the Mercedes Benz SLK roadster and Chrysler's Crossfire coupe share practically everything.

In addition, the same can be said for the Jaguar S-Type and the Lincoln LS.

Mazda 3 shares its platform with the volvo s40.
Pontiac vibe and toyota matrix are practically the same car.
The new chrysler 300C shares the platform as the Mercedes E-class.
The ford thunderbird is on a resized lincoln ls platform.

Saab 9-2X models use Subaru 2.5RS and WRX engines

Hummer H2s use GMs T800 truck platform, which is shared with the Chevy Suburban and Tahoe SUVs and the Chevy Silverado pickups, plus the Cadillac Escalade, Chevy Avalanche, GMC Sierra and Yukons, and other vehicles.

Nissan 350Z sports car, the Infiniti G35 sports coupe and sedan, and the Infiniti FX45 share the same platform.

Jaguar X-Type has the same foundation as Ford's European Mondeo.

The Ford Thunderbird, Lincoln LS and Jaguar S-Type are all on the same platform, as will be the next-generation Mustang.

The same core is used for the VW Golf, New Beetle, Audi TT sports car, and Czech Skoda.

The cool thing is that alot of ford vehicles are doing "reverse" platform sharing.

Volvo S80/S60/V70 --> Ford Freestyle, Ford 500, mercury montego
Mazda 6 --> ford 400 (futura) and lincoln zypher
Land rover Disco 3 (LR3) --> Next Explorer
Mazda3/Volvos40/euro focus (global C1 architecture)

The amazing thing is how Ford keeps obvious driving, design, and look differences while sharing some components (mostly manifolds, common tanks, and fuel pumps, etc.) that are not visible to the average driver.

The mazda 3 and the volvo S40 both look totally different and drive totally different, are made on different continents, and only really share similar blueprints and best practices for manufacturing and unseen design components (like safety engineers from Sweden helped Mazda beef up their safety).

it's not a GM-ization of products like...well...GM

That small volvo is not bad for 25K starting. If it comes out to the same price as an IS300 (30k) in sport trim than it looks like a winner.

Nissan/Renault or is it Peaugot (sp) is doing a nice job sharing platforms...
My friend got an Armada (Infintiy Qx) and Im impressed. Big ole rice truck with all kinds of toys. It's right around the size of my truck and drives nice.

All of these companies have been platform sharing for years....decrease the design cost = increase the profits.

If you go back in time the Probe and the MX-6 were the same car, the difference was one was more designed for sport than the other.

You have to remember all the companies that are within the Ford conglomerate...one of the benefits is the ability to reach into the parts bin to build new cars.

Another note, the Mercedes SLK and E series platforms that were mentioned as being shared by the Crossfire and the 300 are the old platforms. The new SLK and E's platforms are NOT in these cars.
