"Motorist Pulls Over Deputy in Tennessee"

I don't understand why he "pulled him over" in the first place? Why was he the law?

Quote:
McMINNVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A motorist's decision to stop a deputy for speeding escalated into a series of incidents than ended with his entire family joining him in jail.

Last week, Lance E. Champion, 23, reportedly pulled in behind Deputy Lt. Stan Hillis across from the local jail and told Hillis he had violated the speed limit. By the end of their conversation, Champion was in custody charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest and evading arrest.

Champion called his mother, Janice K. Champion, 48, who arrived with her 17-year-old son. The teen allegedly slapped the hand of a deputy who was gesturing for them to leave the area as Lance Champion's vehicle was about to be towed.

"If you strike an officer, you're going to jail 100 percent of the time," said Sheriff Jackie Matheny.

Mrs. Champion was then taken into custody, charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest. Officers say she was loud and refused to obey orders.

Her husband Hal Champion, 47, then arrived from church, was shot with a deputy's Taser and taken into custody on similar charges.

All were later freed on bond.

"This is a fine upstanding family," said the Champions' attorney Michael Galligan. "These deputies acted in a harmful and inappropriate manner. We feel their actions violated the law."

Matheny is backing his men: "They have over 40 years of combined experience and excellent work records. They were as surprised by the Champions' conduct as anyone."

They (the cops) must be from Las Vegas. I wonder how many red lights the cop ran before the dude stopped him.

Citizen arrest but he picked a wrong dude. The stoopid cop also wants to impose his power by arresting the guy.

Manditory "in before this thread gets moved to Automortive because it has 'motorist' in the title" post

That guy has a lot of guts to pull that on a cop, but I think the cop arrested them on a power trip

my math teacher back in college pulled a cop over for throwing a butt out the window. He told him that he was giving smokers a bad name for throwing it out in the window and that he should use the ashtray (my math teacher is NOT a smoker btw). the cop was like, ok I under stand. thanks. and that was it.

Most cops, if you wave them down, will pull over, if only to find out what's wrong. Of course, you're generally not supposed to walk up to them being accusatory and pointing your finger as you're liable to find yourself breathing through your chest.

i wish i knew more about citizens arrest, but i'de venture to say that you can confront an officer in that manner. Not in a beligerent manner, but in a respectfull manner. I'de suggest having a video camera rolling though if you do it.

I've wanted to pull over cops before... had this one guy that was FLYING down teh highway cutting people off, zig-zagging between cars, about ran 3 people off the road etc (no lights running either)... so i followed him... all teh way to the airport terminal, where he got out of the car carrying a paper bag, filled with lunch for himself and his buddy.

he mustave endangered 10 times the number of people i ever do hauling butt on my bike.

FYI: I believe that you can only make a "citzen's arrest" for felonious crimes.
