BMWs, Mercedes, Acuras (TSX, TL, RL, MDX), Hondas (Accord, Pilot, Odyssey), Lincoln (Navigator), Toyotas (Camry, Sienna), Lexus, Land Rovers, Jaguars, Chryslers (300, Pacifica)... And the list goes on...

Just get a Garmin GPS and you can have GPS in any car. It's portable and reusable in many different cars and I bet you money it's cheaper than getting one from a dealer and then having to pay a lot for the dvds.

a friend of mine has a Lexus GS300 and the navi in that one is pretty sweet. Lexus made a smart move in making the unit touchscreen versus the infamous magic wheel in BMW's.

I have a GPS V and it's really good. It's black and white and no voice guidance. Also, I seem to lose signal when I'm in a downtown with tons of skyscrapers, so Manhattanites shouldn't touch this one. I'm not an expert on the streetpilots and I'm surprised that they are that expensive. It looks like the high end streetpilots are installed to use dead rekoning where it can still guide you without GPS signals using your odometer and tachometer. They can still be portable, however. Also, they have more features such as multiple destinations, find nearest on route, and to specify whether you want small roads or freeways. However, if you don't want to pay $1000, I think the GPS V (no color) or the Streetpilot III are the best choices. They both have autorouting and most features you need without breaking the bank. The Streetpilot III is $500 at amazon. Btw if you're looking at garmin maps remember this: The Metroguide series does not have auto-routing capabilities. The city select and city navigator does, so look for those packages. |

Not necessarily true... The touch screens get dirty as hell with all the finger smudges... I've seen some that were barely readable because they weren't kept clean. |

btw a lot of those in the links are not designed for road use. Meaning they'll tell you your gps coords and track your path, but don't show maps and don't route. They're for uses such as hiking, hunting, fishing, or caching. the two I mentioned as well as the other uber expensive streetpilots are the only ones with such capabilities. The ique has road maps, but no autorouting. Trust me, autorouting is the ONLY reason why you should even have a GPS for roads. A caveat, Garmin isn't the only company that makes GPS units. Magellan also makes GPS units, but I know nothing about them. In the world of GPS, as I found out last year, there are two camps. Garmin and Magellan. It's like Apple v. PCs. So I know tons about Garmins, but nothing about Magellans. |

Unless you are completely lazy and eatting tons of fast food, why would the screen get to be barely readable? If you clean it off every couple weeks, it is fine. My buddy is the laziest kid in the world, and even he knows enough to keep things clean. |

My buddy just picked up one of these after it was posted on the deals page, and he loves it. After seeing his, I decided it was too good a deal to pass up, and bought one myself.
Pros: This is a "complete" navigation system that also reads your spedometer to keep you on track when you lose the satellite. The voice is very clear and the screen is a very good size. The radio and CD also sound great- it's Blaupunkt after all... Con: There is only one local place that knows how to install these puppies! They charged $220 for the installation in my buddy's 4-runner. Apparently it requires special tools and parts to do it right.

friend has one of these http://www.garmin.com/products/sp2620/ and it is really good. it's hard drive based, so faster than dvd, and it's portable, and newer than what's in cars. visited him last weekend and it got us all around washington dc and surrounding area.

As unreal said, all garmins are flash/disk based, no cds. The bad part is that you usually have to use your computer and load the maps into the unit (not sure about the 2620 though). My GPS V has about 19 MB of space so that usually equates to one city. I can pretty much fit the entire NOVA/MD/DC area at once.
Another thing to look for. See if your unit gives proper directions off and on a freeway. My aunt's GPS in a really expensive Benz told her to take a 90 degree right turn OFF a freeway. The perfect unit will be able to guide you off a freeway using offramps. This inaccuracy, though, will also occur on a garmin if you load the improper map or are using the unit's base map (which just has the general streets and freeways, no details). My success story with GPS units is that I pretty much can go to any place I want, even if I don't even have a clue where it is or if I don't know the area. I've taken it to NY/NJ, DC, Pittsburgh and I've gotten to every single place I wanted to go. No more looking at mapquest printouts. One time my cousin and I wanted to go to a restaurant we just heard about. Just an address and no directions, and we were already on the beltway. I just whipped out my GPS V, found the restaurant in the listings, and it drove me right to the front door. I love my GPS V ![]() btw that 2920 is next on my list to get. That thing looks sweet compared to my beloved GPS V. Plus you can specify sections where you don't want to go (i.e. traffic jams), which is something my unit sorely lacks.
