Old Widow, 57 Cadillac, what to do?

The old lady that lives above our office is moving out of state tomorrow. She has a 1957 Cadillac two-door for sale. It's in good shape, a daily driver, not a "show" car. She's asking $3,500. I know she kind of needs money.

What would you do? Would you make a low-ball offer? I'd like the car, but really don't have $3,500 to just throw around...

Maybe...

Figure out how much you would be willing to pay (say $2000). Then tell her that she can leave the car there with the sale sign on it. If anyone's interested, they can call you adn you can let them drive it (if they want to buy it, they can still deal with her). If it doesn't sell in 3 weeks or so, then she'll sell it to you at the price you offered.

Sounds to me like you feel guilty for giving her less than $3500, so maybe this is the best that both of you could do. Just an idea.

buy it for 3k, turn around and sell it and pocket the profit.

Do a search here: http://www.collectorcartraderonline....chprocess.html

The cheapest 57 caddy I saw was 6 grand. Scoop 3k from somewhere and then resale it. Watch for rust though, that will be the biggest killer of resale value, trunk, floorboards, battery tray, lower fenders etc.

E-mail Kevster. I'm sure his dad would be very interested in the car as he restores classics.

I totally agree. If it was a 4 door, it would not be very desirable, but a 2 door..WOW! They were nice cars. That's a steal at 3K-3.5K, especially since it's running and passes inspection.

Sounds nice. But I'm with Cubsfan, if you don't want to feel like you're ripping her off, then go that route.

Yeah, it's a two-door and it's pink with a white top. I've only seen it driving by (it's not here at the office) but from a distance it looks ok.

It looks just like this one:

I say wait the 3 weeks and try to sell it for her, but if it's a no go, buy it for $2k then either sell it for $5kish or drive it since you got it cheaper

I'm stupid - that's a pic of a 4-door. Imagine it with two less doors...

Ok, I got a picture of the actual car:

It has new tires, a rebuilt engine and the factory AC still works.

put it this way, you could buy it, and if you change your mind, you could atleast sell it for what you paid.

I just had a chance to talk to the woman. It seems I'm confusing two of her cars (her husband was quite a collector before he died.) They sold the nice Caddy that was a daily driver. The one pictured above needs a lot of work. The engine is fine, but has quite a bit of other problems. She said you could not just get in and drive it away.

Well, it was fun to dream...
