I was recently wondering the same thing, and I was told to basically spend about $250 - $500 on a cheap, low end, used bike.
Practice on that, that way if you fall (and you most likely will) you don't care about any damage done to it. Once you get it down, then start saving for the good one that you've wanted.

yup, I know Maryland's MVA (DMV to the rest of the country.....weird state) offers a Motorcycle Safety Course for like 250 (punks just raised the price...when I was looking into it for this summer). also, there are local community colleges that offer the same thing in Maryland.
http://www.mvamaryland.com/MVAProg/MOTO/default.htm perhaps your state's dmv offers similar programs. |

i second this suggestion....i did this in chicago...it was just a $20 fee (which you were given the option to get refunded back to you at the end of the course, or donate it towards the company's costs)...it was two days, they taught you everything...and i mean EVERYTHING in regards to noobie riders...they taught you how to drive, how to shift, how to turn, emergency situations....etc...and the BEST part was at the end of the course you take a driving test and written test and if you pass you get a lil card that you can bring to the DMV so that you can have a motorcycle license (literally bypassing having to do the examination at the dmv). |
