So my check engine light came on.

How much does it cost to have the check engine light decoded?

I have a 1998 Honda Civic 5spd /w 78,000 miles. Bought this car new.
It was fine all week untill I started the engine for work today and the d@mn check engine came on. I still drove it to work ran fine no rough idle no nothing. So does anybody have the slightest clue of what it could be?

-thx
nhb

I had my engine light come up recently. Mechanic said it was the O2 sensor. What does that do?

if i am not mistaken it measures the heat comming out of the exhaust to determine the fuel:air ratio that needs to be burn to obtain the optimal fuel efficiency and power. i think thats close enough or as much as i know.

d@mn thing is gonna cost me $100.00?

My check engine light comes up because i haven't had someone press the button. After x miles, when i need to change oil it flashes. If i go much longer then it becomes solid. Because the people at jiffy lube didn't know where the button is, the light is always on because they didn't know how to reset it. So it may be nothing, or it may be something. I know that was useless. Sorry.. i'll go back to my corner now.

Hmmmmm
I have an oil reset button but i doubt my 98 civic would lite up the check engine. I know that the 99 models does lite up the check engine if you don't reset it.

The O2 sensor is warranty up to 8 years/80K or 100K miles not the regular 3 years/36K miles warranty so you should be able to get it replaced at the dealer for free.

That's not the check engine light. It's a maintenance light, which will flash and then stay on in a time interval (7500 miles for my car).

sometimes-unhooking the battery and then rehooking will also reset the thing for you-according to my mechanic.
