French fries to fuel our cars?

from abc7.com
French Fries to Fuel Our Vehicles?
SCIENCE/TECHNOLOGY — They feed our appetite, but did you every think French fries could help fuel our cars and trucks?

A research team at the University of Nevada, Reno, is trying to convert the oil from French fries into an "environmentally" bio diesel fuel.

The fuel would consist of French fry oil from hundreds of Nevada restaurants along with ethanol, a bi-product of vegetable waste – like potato skins.

Researchers say in addition to making us less dependent on foreign oil, the fuel will reduce smog by cutting down on nitrogen oxide emissions

so would the octanes be small/medium/supersize?

or perhaps criss cut/wedges/julienne?

If you search around on google, you'll find do-it-yourself projects on how to make fuel out of vegtable oil for diesel cars.

Don't start injecting any political flavor into this.

If this could be mass produced and cheap, I'm all for it.

This has been around for a while - most conversion owners start them on Diesel and then switch to veg oil on the fly. The veg oil gels just below room temperature, which can be a problem unless some sort of tank and line heating system is used.

Why not just get a "Mr. Fusion" from "Back to the Future" and produce 1.21 Jiggawatts of power as fuel.

Umm... that would be Will Smith's "space fuel" for the spaceship in ID4.

I have seen a VW golf that has been around for at least 5 years that runs on biodiesel. I think it is a cool idea. The guy who owns the golf has a father who owns a couple of wings restaurants. He gets the old grease from his dad. Pretty good idea.

What a surprise even in the automotive forum, in a totally non-politcal thread, he can't keep his political opinons to himself.
