Bah, it looks like I have to buy a car.

I really would like to keep it under $10,000, but it has to be reliable enough to last awhile. Am I dreaming that I can find a 2000 or newer good used car in this price range? I've only owed Jeep or Dodge vehicles, so I have no experience with anything else. Can anyone offer any advice what I should look for? I really want to do my homework so I don't do something stupid or have someone take advantage of me. Thanks!

if you want reliable, def try a civic. i've got one and it's boring....but it's at 135k and i just changed the battery a month ago, still gets 30+mpg, has had 1 brake change, and i change the timing belt at 95k. that's it. it's great. kind boring but i plan on driving it until it dies.

That's basically why I purchased a Camry. I wanted a car that was reliable, had some power and size and would last me a long time. Viva Toyota and Honda

Thanks for the advice...I surely don't need anything fancy. I just need it to get me thru school until I can start making some money.

I've been bopping around town this weekend in the Wrangler with the top off...what a blast!

I took the top off mine 3 years ago, the day after I bought it, and it's never been back on since...not too practical during a Utah winter, though.

How come you're not keeping the Wrangler?

You'll cause an accident doing that...

So what's wrong with the Jeep now? Did "he" take it?

Well as far as used cars go... I guess for used Dodge cars go a 2000 Intrepid can be had for under $10K... or possibly a Stratus or Sebring if you wanna stay in the Dodge line.

If you want a midsize sedan, get either the Camry or Accord. If you want a compact, get either the Corolla or Civic.

try www.cars.com or www.carmax.com. i wouldn't buy from them, but it is a good way to see what is out there and what they cost from used car dealers. I know for a fact CarMax is way over priced. but I don't know how low they will deal.

and I am sure you know this since you are an intelligent woman, but never get attached to a car you see. set your limits and if the seller won't meet your demands, leave their dealership. there are plenty of cars out there.

as a side note, if you want to buy in the SF Bay Area and drive to Utah, I have a close family friend who runs a Toyota Dealership.

Well.. under the constraints of buying a vehicle for $10K... well... you take your chances.

Personally, I like buying new and knowing the complete history of the vehicle.

Thanks all. Yep, he's taking the Wrangler. Oh well. Hopefully I'll still get to drive it sometimes.

A quick search on Cars.com found 11 Wranglers under $10,000 within 10 miles of Salt Lake City.

That said, I'll echo what others have mentioned so far - you can't go wrong with a Corolla or Civic for reliability. You could most likely swing a brand new Hyundai for that price too. A tad boring, but reliable, and you can't beat Hyundai's warranty.

Best of luck Kim!

Why don't you sell it and split the money. Should help you buy another car.
Personally, I think its kind of jacked up that he's doing that. But this is just me looking from the outside.
Hope everything works out.

Thanks Ji. The wrangler is not a very good daily driver, it's been built to offroad. The Durango costs too much, and I don't want to have that big of a payment, so he gets to do what he wants with it. I don't think we've had it long enough that we would get any money to split if he sold it. Oh well, the fun of splitting up 14 years worth of stuff begins.
