Help me find a car for my friend
My friend needs to buy a car in about 5 or 6 days. His first choice is a 328i manual coupe but we can't find any good ones in the area. Second choice was a convertable but we could'nt find any of those either. His budget is about $18000 for a RWD coupe with a stick.
Any suggestions?

I take it he's looking for a used car? How much is the new Mustang- That's a fine looking car.

A bit off topic, MPowered, but I was riding with a friend the other day and noticed that we were following a Z4 with a license plate that read "MPOWERD"...I tried to get a pic with his camera phone but it turned out like crap and the plate was unreadable...

Yep, he's looking for a used car. Another requirement I forgot to mention is absolutely no mustangs or cameros.
He lives in Chicago and will be driving this car in the winter. Every single person I know that has driven thier mustang or camero here in the winter has ended up totalling it. Those things are horrible on snow and ice. Unfortunately most 3 series competitors have only emerged in recent years, making most of them still over $20000. My friend is also considering the early 90's SL500 and I'll be suggesting a used S4. |

AWD sport/sporty cars are good.
The WRX is pretty hard to find under 20. I dont know if that's due to availability or market price, but I've seen some 2.5 RS Imprezas which might work. CynJon, that's a cool plate. I really want to get that plate but I wouldn't do it until I actually got an M car. I'm stuck with a 318 right now ![]() |

I think chicago might be a tough place to find AWD cars. I remember when I was in Rochester, almost every other car was a subaru. ![]() Not sure how well a RWD handles in snow/ice tho. |

lol. zactly. i live close to chicago. that's pretty much the worst case scenario right there. that and a motorcycle for a full-time ride.
an a4 would be cool. and s4 better. and a rs6 even better.

how about an AWD Matrix? Not the sportiest or coolest car ever, but it certainly workes out well driving on snowy roads. Not sure if they make an XRS AWD version, but I am thinking no.

We found some FWD S4's but he didn't really like them, even a twin turbo 5spd. Not a big selection of AWD S4's and he doesn't want an A4. Don't know why he wants a cabrio, he thinks it's "pimpin":shrug". Right now he's stickin to the 2.5 RS. It looks like there's a good chance we can find one of those in time. Sorry Brew, the Matrix is out, just isn't his style.

As far as RWD in Chicago, bimmers are great. I've never had any problems in the winter except a couple of times when I turned off the traction control and I was being stupid. I don't ever see myself getting a FWD car again. And for convertibles, I guess I can understand it. Most convertibles suffer from the lack of a roof structurally, but summers here get pretty hot and a drop top can be pretty sweet. He wants a sporty car, so I don't really think he should get one. |
