Biker clocked above 200

Minn. Trooper Writes 205 Mph Ticket

WABASHA, Minn. - With a State Patrol airplane overhead, a motorcyclist hit the throttle and possibly set the informal record for the fastest speeding ticket in Minnesota history: 205 mph.

On Saturday afternoon, State Patrol pilot Al Loney was flying near Wabasha, in southeastern Minnesota on the Wisconsin border, watching two motorcyclists racing along U.S. Highway 61.

When one of the riders shot forward, Loney was ready with his stopwatch. He clicked it once when the motorcycle reached a white marker on the road and again a quarter-mile later. The watch read 4.39 seconds, which Loney calculated to be 205 mph.

"I was in total disbelief," Loney told the St. Paul Pioneer Press for Tuesday's editions. "I had to double-check my watch because in 27 years I'd never seen anything move that fast."

Several law enforcement sources told the newspaper that, although no official records are kept, it was probably the fastest ticket ever written in the state.

After about three-quarters of a mile, the biker slowed to about 100 mph and let the other cycle catch up. By then Loney had radioed ahead to another state trooper, who pulled the two over soon afterward.

The State Patrol officer arrested the faster rider, 20-year-old Stillwater resident Samuel Armstrong Tilley, for reckless driving, driving without a motorcycle license — and driving 140 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 65 mph.

A search of speeding tickets written by state troopers, who patrol most of the state's highways, between 1990 and February 2004 shows the next fastest ticket was for 150 mph in 1994 in Lake of the Woods County.

Tilley did not return calls from the newspaper to his home Monday. A working number for him could not immediately be found by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Only a handful of exotic sports cars can reach 200 mph, but many high-performance motorcycles can top 175 mph. With minor modifications, they can hit 200 mph. Tilley was riding a Honda 1000, Loney said.

Kathy Swanson of the state Office of Traffic Safety said unless Tilley was wearing the kind of protective gear professional motorcycle racers wear, he was courting death at 200 mph.

"I'm not entirely sure what would happen if you crashed at 200 miles per hour," Swanson said. "But it wouldn't be pretty, that's for sure."

Wow! On one hand, that's pretty amazing, yet pretty damn stupid. Luckily nobody got injured. I'd be curious to find out how much that guy's ticket was, and if his insurance company revoked his policy.

i think i would frame that ticket. it might be worth having your license revoked for a while to have the bragging rights that would go having been clocked going 205.

This one was only clocked and written for 167, but US 280 and I-459 is right next to my office...

My old BMW wouldn't run 167 if you pushed it out of an airliner at 30,000 feet. That's just fine by me. I've seen "the ton" (as the old-school Brits refer to 100 MPH) and that's more than fast enough for me.

Yeah, I'm a geezer, but I am alive, and hope to stay that way as long as possible...

This is interesting as well - I was not aware of this despite having lived in AL for four years:

Quote:
"Under Alabama law, state troopers cannot arrest a motorist for a traffic violation. An arrest can be made only if a driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, is a suspected felon, has failed to appear in court or is involved in a wreck that causes injury or death."

This, along with a severe shortage of state troopers, is why Alabama's designation as "The Yellowhammer State" has been shortened to "The Hammer State" by truckers.

ya - you need good roads for those speeds, i've topped out at 115, but my lil 400 red lined about there.

one small bump at 200 and it makes for a bad ride

Would a regular Honda 1000 actually get up to 205mph? I know that the Hyabusa is supposed to be around 195ish from the factory, but I have a feeling that since this was clocked from the air with a stopwatch the ticket might be for a speed faster than what the guy was doing. Just a thought.

I would contest the ticket since the method of using a stop watch is very inconsistent and it is not accurate.

Anyway going pass 200 mph is crazy and too dangerous.

My old BMW has two wheels, not four...

The only four-wheeled BMW I'd consider would be a cherry 2002, or maybe a 6 coupe from the '70s - I don't care for the newer BMW cars at all.

i read on another site the math if the guy with the stop watch had a .25 error in his reaction time that the speed would have only been 184, ill find the math but the site is down at the moment

use dimensional analysis:

.25miles 3600 seconds
______ X ___________ = 205.011 miles/hour
4.39 seconds 1 hour

with, say, a .25 second error (on being advanced to start and tardy to stop):

.25miles 3600 seconds
______ X ___________ = 184.049 miles/hour
4.89 seconds 1 hour

The fine is for the "driving with no license" offsense not the speeding ticket. Here in SoCal, you will be threw in jail and your bike will become state property.

Your brain would most likely go "slosh" into the front of your face, or your neck would break. Either way...road pizza.

The kid must have slowed down a bunch for the cops to stop him. At 200+ you can literally outrun the radios. Think about it... at 200mph, that's 3.3 miles PER MINUTE. If the response time is 5 minutes then you're already 16.5 MILES down the road.

But then again, what do paramedics call "rice rocket" riders? ORGAN DONORS

At 200+ MPH, I don't think many of the organs would survive the "SPLAT".

you may be able to outrun the ground pursuit but with a plane flying overhead, the guy has to stop sometime. I'm guessing the gas millage is fairly low.

You'd be surprised. Most bikes will go for a while, not to mention that they have better mileage than cars to begin with. Shoot, flip the reserve tank when you run out and you still have a good few minutes to run away from a cop.

Not that I'm recommending it in any way...
