CA Hybrid Owners: Good News

You now qualify for the sticker to drive in the carpool lane even if you don't have more than 1 passenger. The only qualification is that your car must get 45mpg and meet required emissions standards.

Yeap I saw that on the news yesterday but I don't think either car I want to buy will qualify (Honda Accord V6 hybrid, Toyota Highlander Hybrid, or Lexus 400H).

There are only 2 hybrids that meet that requirement: Honda Civic Hybrid and the Toyota Prius. Now Prius sales are going to only go up more.

I'm excited to hear about this because I think it's a good gesture towards promoting clean air and all that other good stuff.

Honestly though, where I live there is only a small window of time during the day when driving in the carpool lane actually helps. It's usually for about 20-30 minutes on the fringes of rush hour.

During peak traffic, the carpool lane on the 405 moves as miserably slow as all the other lanes, and when the freeway isn't crowded - it doesn't make a big difference anyways.

If trends stay the same, the wait for a Prius will extend too about six months. Back in Feb, when I was in the market for a new car, the wait for a Prius was four months.

I've been waiting for that to go through, but everyone already knew it would go through in California. The real question is whether the Feds will give an exemption to the HOV rules and allow California to allow the Hybrids in the carpool lanes. As the laws stand right now, if the state allows it, they will loose all Federal funding. We'll find out toward the end of the year if it goes through or not.
