Radio Controlled things
Well, I need your guys help. You see I have some ehobbies gift certs that I have to spend soon. The even better news is that I get to spend them on myself. The problem I do not know what to get. I have flown RC gas airplaines before, but now where I live Ihave no place to fly them. So now I have narrowed it down between a Helicopter and a Gas power car. I have a tennis court at my complex and can fly the helicopter there, and I can drive the car at the high school track down the street.
Helicopter: If I get a helicopter I am thinking it should be eletric. I know they are hard as hell to fly, but I am pretty good in simulator and a quick leaner. Plus, gas helicopter are alot more expensive, but money is not a large issue here. I dont like messing with batteries, but will if I have too. Gas car: I want a gas car because they are FAF (fast as f---). The one I am looking at has a 2 speed transmission and can go upto 60 mph, but top speed isnt the objective because you can switch the gears and have better acceleration and just less top end. This car is fully upgradable as far as mods. It does come witha eltric start motor, so no messing with pull starters. The one I am looking at is a 1/10 to scale(13 inches). The other car I am looking at is a Super (something like 20 inches), but doesnt have as high top end, but supposed people enjoy these much more. Electric copter1 i am looking at: http://www.ehobbies.com/rc-cty-cn1020acmc.html (complete) Eltric Copter2 i am looking at: http://www.ehobbies.com/gwshfd3fii.html (it looks like I will have to buy the gyro with this one. i already have a futaba 6xa 6 channel remote and reciever with servos) Gas copter I am looking at: http://www.ehobbies.com/rc-ttr-4839-a11.html (it looks like I will have to buy the gyro with this one. i already have a futaba 6xa 6 channel remote and reciever with servos) 1/10 Scale gas car I am looking at: http://www.ehobbies.com/1006-0469.html Super scale gas car I am looking at: http://www.ehobbies.com/rc-hpi-595.html I would really appriciate your input from your experiences.

I have a plane I was building while studying for the CFA, a trainer that I haven't touched in about 3 months. It was a great stress reliever, now I just have to finish it.
Hmm...gets me thinkin. RC stuff is fun. As far as your other questions, I don't know anything about the rest of that stuff. |

First of all, I think you're much better off giving the GC's to me...it'll save you lots of money in the long run!
Don't get the helicopter unless you're prepared to spend a LOT of time learning (i.e. repairing ). I've flown RC aircraft for many years and helicopters are a big difference--both $$$-wise and skill level required. I've currently got two nitro RC vehicles, a Traxxas T-Maxx and a HPI RS4 2. Whatever you do, don't get a belt-drive car (like the one you linked to, and my version 2 RS4). Belts are frustrating because all it takes is a tiny rock kicked up by the tires to jam/break a belt. The newer HPI cars are all shaft drive--a vast improvement. I would recommend the HPI RTR Nitro RS4 3 EVO over the Traxxas car. Additionally, I know from experience that the TRX 2.5 engine in the Traxxas is a picky PITA as far as tuning goes--however it is a real screamer when it is happy. For a few dollars less, any of the the non-EVO RS4 3 models will do nicely, as well. Good luck and have fun--welcome to the money-pit...errrrr...hobby. ![]()

wow cynJon, thanks for the advice. I didnt see the HPI RTR Nitro RS4 3 EVO before, looks like a much bettter choice, and the M3 body is slamming. I heard HPI makes some great quality products. Yuh, drive shafts seem like a better idea vs belts. Also, I forgot to add this earlier, what accessories do I need to get and what % nitro fuel? I was looking at this:
http://www.ehobbies.com/rc-cen-g70433.html Which is there suggestion, what else do i need besides fuel to run? And as far as helicopter, I do anticipate alot of time to learn, i am going to by the training feet so i can get a feel for it. I have been into rc for a while, borrowing friends and such, just never really too the plung. I have allocated 500 total including repairs and gas. i also enticipate alot of breakin time, i know you cant just grap the engine and go. |

Hey cynJon, what about an offroad gas buggy of sort from that ehobbies. I do nto want anything crazy as a Tmax, i really dont like monster trucks. With offorad buggies i can run them through short grass, and pavement and dirt. I found a really neat RC dirt track kinda near my house. any other ideas?

The most important piece of advice I can give you is FOLLOW THE MFR's BREAK-IN DIRECTIONS! Don't rush it...nothing ruins a nitro engine faster than improper break-in (except maybe getting dirt in it--30,000 to 40,000 RPM is a very hostile environment!). Quote:
As far as a 2WD stadium truck goes, it's hard to go wrong with the Associated RC10 GT, probably the most popular nitro truck out there, besides maybe the T-Maxx. TONS of hop-up parts available (the RC10 is probably the most popular electric car, as well). 2WD is very easy to maintain (less driveshafts, axles, transmission parts, etc) yet is still fast and fun. Another good choice would be the Losi XXX-NT Sport or the Traxxas Nitro Rustler 2.5. If you want to go with a 4WD buggy, the Ofna .26 Ultra LX Comp would be a good choice (and ridiculously fast, as well ). The Ofna Hyper 7 series buggies are even nicer, but at a higher cost. Another option would be the HPI RS4 MT2.The 4WD buggies will out-handle the 2WD buggies and stadium trucks, but it's a lot of fun to run the RWD vehicles in the dirt. Choice is up to you...have fun!
