OnStar

Do any of you use it, and do you think it is worth the money to subscribe?

I had it on my last car... I guess it was nice to have in case of an emergency, but I never used it even once.

But, then I guess you shouldn't be disappointed that you don't have to use your insurance policy!

I have Mercedes TeleAid which is the equivalent of OnStar. I have not used it for anything serious, but I think there is peace of mind that can be had for the annual subscription. One time, my car alarm was going off in front of my house. Within a minute, my cell phone and home phone were ringing. They were both calling from TeleAid asking if I was in posession of my vehicle because they were alerted that the alarm was going off. Using GPS, they pinpointed the car at my home. I told them there was an alarm malfunction and I was trying to shut it off. They quickly diagnosed the car and turned the alarm off.

One of the guys I know will use the TeleAid system when he is bored. He'll just sweet talk the person on the other end into not deducting any minutes from his TeleAid plan. The annual subscription for TeleAid was free for the first year which includes 30 minutes of usage. I don't recall how much the fee is because it's just billed to my credit card. I'm still within the first year of my new Mercedes so I haven't been billed for this one yet.

It essentially is a cell phone. It is just fully integrated into your car like a handsfree kit. It has 3 options: SOS (Emergancy situations), Information, and Concierge. It runs off the AT&T Wireless analog system.

on star

I have onstar in my suburban and it works great. On star uses verizon phone service the good thing is the phone is transmitted thru satelite not analog or digital, this means you should have 99% coverage in the Continental US. $10 verizon will add the vehicle to you plan.

No wonder Verizon's signal strength is so good...

I didn't know that they were straight satellite....

Onstar doesn't use satellite for their phone connection. It uses GPS data to transmit to the Onstar center through an analog/digital connection.

This is what the Onstar web site says:
OnStar uses existing emergency service providers, cellular telephone and satellite technologies. It operates alongside the electrical system in your vehicle and is powered by your vehicle's battery. If your vehicle's battery is damaged or disconnected, our service will not function. Onstar currently uses the analog cellular network maintained by separate cellular companies. This provides the broadest geographic coverage of any current wireless system in the United States and Canada.
