Car insurance is stupid...

So I got my renewal today and they've dropped my premiums by $500. Nice huh? No drop in benefits or increases in deductibles.

How?

I'm turning 25. I don't think I was a safer driver than I was a couple of months ago...What a silly system we live in.

It's all in the risk profile my friend... heck, wait 'til you get married!

I must agree with you, Kevster. I can't stand insurance companies!

My truck was hit, while parked last month. A guy in an F-350 with a flat bed took the turn out of his parking lot too sharply and hit me. I figured it was an open and shut case. Guess what? He got one of his Mexican buddies to say he witnessed the whole thing, and it was my fault.

I should've went with my initial instinct and pulled the baseball bad out from under my seat.

Mine went down when I got married. I guess they think that you take less risk if you have a family.

It's not worth getting married to lower your insurance. You'll end up spending much more money elsewhere, so there's no savings.

commenting on the marriage issue... i'm not sure if lowering insurance costs balances out for increased blood pressure and a second driver in the car

I think I used those exact words (WTF), when I found out that the other insurance company said it was my fault.

I even took the time to try to find a witness after the accident. There were none present. Of course, the other insurance company says that they have a witness.

I got paid though, but my insurance company is pursuing the whole thing.

gear, which insurance do u use?

I use geico, and they didn't lower it for me at all when i turned 25. I'm not changing though, cuz they haven't caught onto my driving record yet (couple tickets within the last 18 months).....and my premium has stayed constant.

Probably, but I haven't had any need to file a claim. I do pay a lot, but I have a lot of coverage (100/300/100).

I'm going to shop around again, though I am limited since not all companies offer renters' insurance in addition to car insurance.

I asked geico to re-quote me when I got the new car and again for when I turn 25 because my 25th birthday is coming up. It went down about 400 a year for turning 25 with the same premiums.

Check with Erie. I found around the Balt-DC area they had the best rates when comparing it to other insurers using the same coverages. Hopefully it wil work out for you too.

Car insurance is the removal of risk on your part while paying somebody else to take on that risk.

Some people say that they should get their premiums back if they never get into an accident. Sure, that might work if you can say for certain that you will *never* get into one as long as you are being carried. But the second you need that insurance you're really gunning for it.

Insurance is based upon actuarial sciences (statistics). Statistics show drivers under the age of 25 get into accidents more. Statistics show that married people drive more safe. Statistics show that if you get into one accident you might get into another with increasing probability the more accidents you have. Statistics show that if you get caught speeding your probably a less safe driver than somebody else.

They form a risk profile and charge you accordingly.

I get a break for auto seatbelts. Why? Because I don't have to remember to put it on, reducing my risk due to forgetfulness. I get a break for being over 25. I used to get a break for good student, I guess they think I am more logical if I am smart.

Here's another "stupid insuance company" scenario. I was insured for 2 cars, and the cost was around $860 for both. After dropping coverage on one of the cars, I lost the "multi-car discount", which made my coverage for one car $860 as well.

Here's the thing. Why don't they assume that you linearly improve your driving ability as you turn 25. So for instance if they know your statistics at 20 and at 25 why don't they charge you something closer to 25 when you're 24.

Premium will drop when you reach 25 or when you married so it's not unexpected but I am surprised that it dropped that much.

I bought a used 94 Accord and made it my "primary vehicle". When I added it to my insurance (liability only) my overall insurance cost went down. The reasons for this are 1) multi-car discount and 2) the fact that my full-coverage vehicle, which is much more expensive than that Accord, is now my "pleasure vehicle". I like the sound of that......he-he.

My Accord is great b/c I use it in the winter so my other car doesn't take the "winter beating".

The you are more dangerous from 18-25 sucks. Ya i know a lot of my friends are horrible driver, but I have been driving for almost 6years(about to be 22) and I have never had an accident or ticket. But since I am under 25, I am in a higher risk.....

heheheh i blow away this theory... never made an ins claim yet, but the older i get the more crazy i get... i buy a house, then a second bike. I wheelie 10 times or more on the way to work when two years ago i couldn't even wheelie. I pull wheelies up halfway through corners in 1st gear at every corner in town i can. I slide my car around 50% of the corners i take, and when its wet, i break it loose on teh highway at 60mph in 3rd just because i can.

the older i get, the more i do it because the more i learn how to handle my vehicles.

oh yeah, i'm certifably insane... i think.

Also, i only carry liability. Oh well.
