Motorcycles: 2005 Riding Season Check In
Took it out for the first time on Saturday only to find out the battery was dead. I went to a Harley shop because they balance and mount tires on the cheap for me. Had to push start it in front of the place because of the battery.
Its going to be in the 50's this week, but I have to wait till the new battery comes in. 1994 Honda VFR750 w/ 28K on the clock. ph33r the V4!!! ![]() |

Pulled my old BMW R90 out of the garage last Sunday. Aired the tires up, checked the oil, cleaned the windscreen, fired it up and rode for about two hours.
Winter temps aren't generally the problem here, but this winter has been very cold and wet for the deep south. BTW, Odyssey batteries RULE! I bought one last summer. The bike sat in the garage from mid-October until last weekend without being charged and fired right up!

I've been riding most of the winter, but I'll be riding more now that the temps are rising. Had too much to get down this weekend to ride, but later this week should be pretty good.

I would love one. I really want a Shadow. (grew up on the back of Harleys and love the chrome)
But Donnie won't get a street bike until he is out of the military (too many rules and exceptions to insurance he says..) Until then, I, too, are a sad little panda ![]() |

Since this is bike related:
I'd like to invite anyone here who wants to try to join the Iron Butt Association. http://Ironbutt.com There are a lot of rides, with the beginning being 1000 miles in 24 hours. Maybe we should set up a G|A group ride for quals... Check out the 50cc stories and the rally stories as well... Gug |

Smokey-
You're 1/10th the way there! lol Being optimistic. It's not so bad. What gets bad are what comes after: 1500 in 36 hours 1500 in 24 hours Doing a "50CC or 100CCC" Coast to coast in 50 hours or coast to coast to coast in 100 hours or less, ie Jacksonville to San Diego back to Jacksonville. I will be attempting these this summer. the 10 10ths..1000 miles/day for 10 days and the graddaddy: the Rally: 11,000+ in 11 days, with the last few winners coming in over 13,000. Plus with the rally, it's not just plain riding, you have to stop and get photos of yourself at various check points for points to place, or answering questions, that sort of thing. Your sheet will say things like "How many stone ears of corn are outside the city hall of blahblah, IA" or "get a photo of yourself at ...." or "get a $5 chip from such and such casino". Gug |

I used to get bored on the long trips. I just got some earbuds and those helped out a lot.

Oh yeah...my distance riding didn't improve until I added XM to my Valkyrie, and my Ipod. I agree with you there. Audio books help me melt the miles.
And of course cruising through deer infested interstates at night provides enough interesting moments to keep you alert as well. gug |

The longest I've gone on my honda shadow is around 250 miles when I took it down to college (Chicago to UIUC). Its definitely a test of endurance, especially if there are heavy winds.
I'll probably be taking out the bike again in a few weeks - I had a dead battery too, so just got a new one in there. Can't wait for the cold weather to go away ![]() |

MC batteries usually dont come charged and usually dont last longer than a year, get yourself a decent MC charger like 15-25bucks. if its gonna sit for any lenth of time you can get one of those solar powered trickle chargers for about 20bucks. i had to sell all my bikes some i built from the ground up, after i broke my back, its just not worth taking a chance of falling anymore. VFR is a great bike for tearing up those urban streets and mountian roads. keep the rubber side down and have some serious fun !!!
