I got notified of the recall a few months ago and got mine in for the recall. A big glitch, but on the positive side, since you have the Hybrid motor, the car doesn't die on you. You still have time to get off the road.

Still worth every penny to me, although since we can drive in the carpool lane alone now, my wife has stollen my car...

From the Dow Jones newswire:

Quote:
Toyota Motor Corp. said Friday it will recall 160,000 of its Prius gasoline-electric hybrid cars worldwide due to a possible problem with the engine.

Engines in some Prius cars overseas have stalled while driving, causing the vehicles to operate solely on the electric motor. A glitch with the electronic control units may be to blame, a Toyota spokeswoman said.

No accidents or injuries related to the engine problems have been reported, the spokeswoman said.

Hybrid cars are powered by both gasoline engines and electric motors, using either one of these power sources or both depending on the driving conditions.

Toyota, a leading hybrid vehicle maker, will repair all the recalled cars for free. The costs to the company are not yet known, the spokeswoman said.

The company plans to recall 75,000 Prius cars in the U.S., another 70,000 in Japan and the remainder in Europe, Australia and other markets.

Toyota launched the Prius in 1997 and sold 125,700 Prius vehicles globally last year.

Saw it this morning. It's only a SW update that's required.

Better they catch it now than later. Though this should validate some of the 8 year old computer skeptics.

I average about 44 MPG. I could get better if I wanted to drive more conservatively, but I do a lot of driving and not many people pass me on the freeway.

On a conservative take (avoiding HWs where possible) I get 56-58 MPG (56.5 right now), with my best tank being 60.3. Mixed HW & local drops it to 52-54.

Still haven't received a recall notice, though. Maybe mine wasn't affected.

It's tremendously fun to drive...great layout and instrumentation, kickin' stereo (with added satellite and sub), cool look, major geek factor.

It really is a fun car. Over the years, I've had a 2 Jeeps, a Trans Am and a Truck. I don't drive cars that I don't enjoy. The Prius actually has pretty good pick up and power, partially due to the fact that the electric motor puts out maximum torque immediately (it doesn't ramp up with RPM's like a conventional motor). If your expecting v8 power, you'll be dissapointed, but hey, it's not a muscle car.
