Lightbulb ok- smarty apexr's need to explain this one to me...

I took these shots of a bike that really caught my eye, but jeepers don't expect me to explain or understand what I am looking at! It's like that old line: What is porn? I can't tell ya, but I know when I'm looking at it. This is motorcycle porn.... I don't know what it is, but it's amazing that it's not all over the Internet.... Thanks in advance to DF who'se gonna know all about this bike! Uh, where are the friggin hubs? How does the rear wheel drive? Daytona Beach may not be paradise, but the bikes...

the bike is for show, does it roll, yes,..well? no. it looks like its some kind of bearing design or whatever. you ride that thing for a while and those wheels would probably get so messed up.

Looks like the inner hub is bolted to the body, but the wheels could turn if they had their own rim and rolled on bearings against that inner hub.

And these look cooler and like they might actually work(albeit uncomfortable):

Unfortunately, motorcycles is one area where I don't have any expertise... but thanks for the "props" anyways.

It's the Hubless Monster

JAN 2004, The Hubless Monster Mike began the year pulling out all the stops with his creation of The Hubless Monster Motorcycle. Many Secret conversations resulted in the creation of the largest Motorcycle Tire in the World, The 360x18 by Vee Rubber. Not stopping there, a 23” Diameter Tire was also developed. The mold production began and Mike started with the construction using plywood and steel “Models” of what the tire would look like. This new 360 Tire was so wide and with limited time for production (2 Months) that he decided on using friction drive technology from the Carnival Ferris Wheel, plus the drive system would have to be hidden. The bike would incorporate the most amount of sheet metal ever used on an Amen Bike. Mike decided to pull out the drawings for The Hubless Wheels that were 8 years old, and build A REAL Hubless Bike. The “Sheet Metal” resulted in being fabricated as boxed structural steel panels used to mount the wheels and drive system. This Bike is so Revolutionary and Historic that the following list is a breakdown of its accomplishments.

They are as follows:

1.) The First Fully Functional Double Hubless Bike in the World.

2.) The First Bike Fully Engineered and built without the Tires being in Existence

3.) The First Custom Bike in the world to unveil a new tire on a completed Bike

4.) The First Custom Bike in the world to have the Largest Motorcycle Tire in the world, 360mm.

5.) The First Custom Bike in the world to have the new Industry Breaking 23” tire size.

6.) The First Custom Bike to incorporate Friction Drive Technology with Hubless Wheel Design for a Total Clean Look.

The Hubless Monster has been featured and shown most everywhere including the Discover Channel Great Biker Build Off.

That's how they work. Great observation!

When you see it in person it's even more mind boggling. Btw- Bike Week and Biketoberfest are just that: the craziest bikes you've ever seen. I saw JJ's bikes and Samsone Bikes and Arlon Ness bikes being completely ignored out there. FORGET about Orange County and bolt on stuff like that. These guys are so out there it's not even funny. It takes days to see it all. I am glad I live out here so I can work during the day and cruise the hot spots afterwards.

My guess is that some sort of device is pressed up against the tire and spun causing the tire to rotate.

It's explained in the article kgsilvas posted right above you.

The motor drives a wheel that is held up to the tire, it turns the wheel much like a couple of gears. It can't be as efficient as a chain, but the point is to look good, not perform well.
