Florida Law May Require Generators at Gas Stations

Florida Law May Require Generators at Gas Stations

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Gov. Jeb Bush said Monday he was considering whether state law should require service stations to have a power source -- like generators -- so they can continue to pump gasoline during outages such as the widespread lack of electricity that accompanied Hurricane Wilma and created miles-long gas lines, reported Sun-Sentinel.com.

According to Sun-Sentinel.com, State Sen. Jeff Atwater said last week he would introduce legislation to require new gas stations to have generators starting June 1. Existing stations would have to retrofit by December 2007.

Bush made his comments during a brief visit to the hurricane recovery logistics center Monday afternoon at the South Florida Fairgrounds west of West Palm Beach.

One thing Bush said he already was sure about: the taxpayers shouldn't be subsidizing gas station owners' purchase of generators, according to Sun-Sentinel.com.

The downside would be that more folks would want to remain with their generator-driven stations despite evacuation recommendations.
