gosh..
"my parents bought me a passat" "i really want a sub" "money is not an issue" "i really want a sub" first, the place you want to doesn't know what they're talking about, as your cars computer is not in your head unit. i'm assuming you were given a b5.. erm, one of the new passats (1998+). the ecu is located "under" your windshield. if you lift the hood, and remove the plastic rain gutter thats at the bottom of your windshield, in that gap just exposed under the gutter, there'll be a small black box. that contains your ecu. and i hope you dont bother messing with it, because those chips are on national backorder last i heard. second, the monsoon system is bloody great just as it is. it's designed to give you the best sound possible. adding a sub to it will just ruin the quality. unless, of course, the only reason you want a sub is to fit in with the rest of the kids, while foregoing sound quality. it -is- possible to add a sub, or two, or however many to your car, but something inside me just doesn't want to give that kind of info away. sorry

i regularly install stereo equipment, and i know a couple guys at al and ed's. there are plenty of other places in the area (around pasadena and such) that will install a sub. i know a person, his name is eli, and he owns vivelli's, and tint and sterero shop in alhambra. what basically happens is that you tap out of the signal of the rear speakers, and plug it into you amp. the monsoon system may have dedicated amps for each speaker (a la bose), so that may make it difficult. i suggest installing it yourself, not let any of your friends touch it. you're not destroying your sound system, and NUXX above was saying. you're merely accentuating it with deeper base. stock systems are great, but you wanna add your own personal touch. i think a sub is a good investment. make sure you get a twin voice coil sub and a sealed box...look at a jl sub and eclipse/ppi amp..thats a good bet.
good luck
