I was thinking about geting a Fit or a Yaris, but I don't want to do a monthly payment.

So I'm shopping for used/previously owned ;-) car - what do you think I can get for around ~$5G - I was thinking of Honda, Mazada, and Toyota.
Or should I just suck it up and buy a new car?

Hondas have a good rep for being damn reliable. I'd say go for one. Better yet, find a nice Volvo. Those things will run forever.

Ah...gotcha. I hadn't heard of them.

Later this year, Saturn is supposed to release a whole new fleet of cars that are inexpensive but extremely well-built and so far well-reviewed, unlike past Saturns. I'd love to have next year's turbocharged Sky, for instance, as a second car. Plus, they're fuel-efficient as hell, and much more well-built than the line has been known for. Some even have variations of Honda engines. So, based on what I've read and some friends' reccommendations, I'd look that way for a new car in a few months, if you decide to go new.

Then again, you usually can't go wrong with a Civic or something, but as a RWD fan, I've always tended to avoid Civics and Accords.

Stay away from front wheel drive Volvos. The 2/7/9 series (all RWD) are pretty decent cars. They're not without their quirks, but pretty decent nonetheless.

The FWD cars are notorious shophounds.

Actually you are wrong. The FIT was in the work since 2001. I think it was available in Japan about 3-4 years ago.

Forgot to mention that. I had a 240 for ages. Then again, I stay away from all FWD cars anyway, and am skeptical of most AWD cars. I just don't like the way they drive, I can handle skids very well in a RWD, and RWD is much, much easier to work on. Replacing CV joints and trying to get to a belt that's wedged against a fender are hard enough. The engines are in all wrong.

Dont go for a certain car just because its a Honda or Toyota. Yeah, those makes are known for making damn reliable cars but that doesnt mean jack if the person who owned it abused the car. That goes with everything else. Your best bet is to take someone who knows what they are doing and go shop around. #1 thing is to not rush into buying something.
